  • I do ‘heat the person’ if OH isn’t also at home for a few days. I’m not going to sit under a blanket though. I have some thermal tops, socks and slippers.
    OooOOOOoooh! Photo please!

    (I'm ashamed....)
  • "heat the person, not the room"

One of the infra red wall/ceiling heaters.

    Interesting. Anyone used one?

You either heat with electricity, or you turn the central heating on. All electric heaters are equally efficient, so I don’t know why people are recommending oil filled
Electricity costs three times as much as gas, so you can probably heat the whole flat with the central heating for the same cost as heating just this room with electricity.
If you leave the heating in the rest of the flat off during the day, the central heating will have some catching up to do when it comes on in the evening. So, you may not be saving as much as you think.
Convection electric heaters - smelly dry-dusty, noticeable hysteresis.
Fan - noisy and unpleasant air movement.
    Panel - too directional.
Bar or halogen - smelly, directional.
    Oil-filled - steady output.
Yes, it'll be worth the OP doing sums to work out if the gas CH is worth running, but factor in double the wear, and presumably half the life of some components.
Smart TRVs are great, but cost around £50 a pop.
Yes, if the rest of the flat is unheated during the day, it'll take more catching up for the eve, but that's true of everybody's - you just need to factor that in to your timings. Bear in mind it's always cheaper to have the heating off until it's required, delay or not.

The other not to be underestimated issue, is that even if the CH is on low, you are just sitting at a desk. So you tend to get cold in the Winter anyway, as opposed to doing  normal domestic activities, especially if the room is one of the colder ones in the house. So a bit of very local heat can still be needed even if the house/room is not that cold anyway.
  • Thanks for all the suggestions.  I’m going to go with using the central heating for now as it will probably be cheaper than buying and running another form of electric heater and monitor the costs and then maybe just suck it up and move the office to the lounge in November.
