Volvo XC60 Lux SE

I recently test drove a 2017 XC60 with the17 inch alloys and thicker side wall size. I’m looking to upgrade from my current V40 R-Design to a quieter, refined motor cruiser and thought the 5 cylinder 2.4 diesel XC60 with the smaller wheels would fit the bill.
I was surprised that the XC60 was a little more noisier in the cabin compared to my car! Another expectation that didn’t meet was the engine refinement. I thought a 5 cylinder engine would be smoother and more refined than my 4 cylinder but no, they’re about the same.
The seats were also the same. I can’t see how the XC60 is much of an upgrade from the V40.

The V40 is a regular estate car and the XC60 is an SUV so they're not directly comparable. The SUV will have more wind noise and more road noise.

The type and condition of tyres can make a difference to the amount of road noise, not just the rim size.
A diesel will generally be more noisy than an equivalent petrol. Is the V40 petrol?
Have you given up on the idea of a Mondeo?

If quietness and comfort are priorities, the M3 would seem to be a non-starter.

If you have the budget, an EV may be very quiet as an option to consider.1 -

My only complaint about my XC60 is the noise, mainly road noise. I've only had it about 6 years so perhaps I'll get used to it in time.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.1
