Thunderbird email programme

Options
I use Thunderbird Nebula 128.2.3esr (64-bit) software programme for accessing emails.

Have used for many years, but these past few months it seems incredibly slow when moving emails into various folders. I only have 3 folders, with not many emails in them, and compact them every week or so.

Does anyone else use this software, and also find it slow, or is there something I could do to speed it up a little?

Using Windows 11, laptop.

Thank you

  • Tbird for me is instant when moving e-mails to folders, just transfer 30 to a folder and no lag whatsoever, using same version as yourself.

Thanks for replying,  I can't think what the problem can be!

Previously I thought it was a problem with my old laptop, but it's just the same on my new one.
  • My provider is Hotmail/Outlook and never had a slowdown issue. I don't know is other providers cause bottlenecks.

If you're using it in IMAP mode that makes the changes on the server which means its dependent on your internet connection/speed.

If you have poor wireless for whatever reason it will take a while to resync and update.

My main email is GMail, I also use Hotmail, though rarely.

Have just checked, and using IMAP settings.  Wireless speeds are quite good, usually around 70 mbps, we don't have fibre to the house yet in this area, but the speed of transferring emails used to be instant, and not sure what could have changed.

Would it make a difference if I used POP3 settings, and is it possible to change?

    Thanks for your help.

POP3 downloads to your computer but removes from the server.
This may increase local processing speed, but if something happens to your Thunderbird profile, you'll lose the lot.

You might do better initially to (if the laptop has the option) take it off the wi-fi and use a wired connection to see what happens.  If the problem goes away its a wireless throughput problem.

    Thanks @Neil_Jones for the information.

It sounds like it would be better keeping IMAP settings rather than changing.  I could disconnect wi-fi, but not sure whether we have an ethernet cable or a port on my laptop to fit into.

Not sure whether the issue occured following a Thunderbird upgrade, as it used to transfer files rapidly and no settings have been changed.

    Very grateful for your input.
  • You could try using the portable version https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/thunderbird_portable
If the portable works fine then it's your  installed Tbird,

Thanks @HillStreetBlues would I download the portable version and set up my account?  Also keep the initial version as well?

I will have a look tomorrow. Thanks for information.
  • The portable is self contained in it's folder (you can cut and paste to where you want),  you can keep both if you waned.
If it is your installed Tbird you can uninstall and reinstall or carry on using the portable one and uninstall the other one.
