    Try doing it online.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
  • thought you needed the reference number from the renewal for that

To tax your vehicle you’ll need:
    • a completed V11 reminder or V10 ‘Vehicle licence application’
    • your Registration Certificate or New Keeper supplement, if using a V10
    • a completed V62 ‘Application for a Vehicle Registration Certificate V5C’, if you don’t have a Registration Certificate
    • an MOT test certificate (if your car or motorcycle is over three years old)
    • insurance that covers you against third party claims for death or injury and damage to property caused by using the vehicle
    • the payment for vehicle tax (not needed if your vehicle is exempt from paying vehicle tax)

As you don't have the reminder you'll just need to fill in the above form at the post office :)

EDIT - you can also apply online, just use the vehicle registration number & the V5 logbook document reference number.

I think you will need either the renewal form or the registration document. The only other option is to pay £25 for a duplicate. Direct.gov.

Tax without a Registration Certificate or New Keeper Supplement

If you’re shown as the registered keeper of the vehicle on DVLA records, you can tax in person or by post at your nearest DVLA local office.

You’ll need to complete a V62 ‘Application for a Vehicle Registration Certificate (V5C) which must be accompanied by £25 (fee for a duplicate Registration Certificate). Include this with a completed V10 ‘Vehicle licence application’, MOT, insurance and payment for vehicle tax.

With online it looks like you need a reference no. from your renewal:
    Reference number
the 16 digit reference number printed in the yellow box on the front of your V11 reminder (Vehicle Licence Application/Statutory Off Road Notification) or
the 11 digit reference number shown on the front of your Registration Certificate (V5C) and your vehicle registration number

    Debit or credit card

There’s a £2.50 service charge for using a credit card.

    Vehicle test certificate (computer issued)

A valid MOT, Goods Vehicle or Passenger Service Vehicle (PSV) test (if needed) is checked on the Computerised MOT Database.

    Insurance

Valid insurance covering your use of the vehicle is checked on the Motor Insurance Database run by the Motor Insurers Information Centre. If you’re not the policyholder, you’ll need permission from the policyholder to allow the electronic check. You cannot use the service if you’ve recently changed your Insurance Company.

I hope you find reg. document as the copy will cost £25!

  • Sorry but you cannot do it at Post Office without the renewal or V5C registration certificate.

Your best/quickest option is to go to your local DVLA office (look on direct.gov.uk for nearest to you). You will need to take your car insurance certificate (not poilcy doc/schedule), proof of your new address dated in last 3 months eg bank statement/utility bill. You will need to complete the V62 form for replacement V5C and V10 form to tax. It will cost £25 for replacement plus money for tax.

You cannot do online/by phone without v5c or renewal. Plus even if you could it would go to your old address which wouldn't help!

If you cannot get to your local DVLA then you can post all above docs and cheque. It is done by return of post (usually 5-7 days) but legally you would need to keep vehicle off road from 1st until you have tax disc displayed.

Please bear in mind if you do go to the local office tomorrow it will be busy so be prepared to wait - take a book!

It says on Direct.gov that you can at a post office if you are recorded as registered keeper:
Tax without a Registration Certificate or New Keeper Supplement

If you’re shown as the registered keeper of the vehicle on DVLA records, you can tax in person or by post at your nearest DVLA local office.

OP - I suggest you read Direct.gov website.

No it says, as you quoted, you can do it at your nearest DVLA Local Office. Does not say Post Office, this is because they are an agent and therefore cannot check the details held by DVLA if you do not have your V5C or renewal.
