Car faults within 6 months

Hi All,

Background of my issue is as below, my query is is it likely the financial ombudsman would uphold a complaint re right to reject the vehicle? Can I reject the vehicle, and will involving my credit card company help?

I picked up a new vehicle on July 12th. The vehicle was financed through a £1000 deposit on credit card, £4000 on bank transfer and £21000 on hire purchase.

On August 2nd the vehicle had a seatbelt fault and a windscreen wiper fault, we also noticed on journeys that the utilisation of the hybrid battery power was 0%.
I contacted the dealership and it was returned to them on August 5th. That week I also contacted the hire purchase company and told them the vehicle had been returned and I was querying a right to reject within 30 days. They said (if I remember rightly) to call back if the issue wasn't resolved or to discuss a rejection.
We went ahead with the repair given within 30 days the onus of proof of the fault is on me.
The car was repaired and picked up on August 16th.
There wasn't a battery fault (it wasn't being utilised because we were using air con in august -eye roll). But they replaced the air bag sensor and possible windscreen wiper sensor.

I noticed this week the car felt like it was going to stall on idling.
I drove the car yesterday 18th to supermarket car park and when I turned it on to leave it came up with two faults one saying Engine Fault; Repair needed and one saying Adaptive Cruise Control Fault.
I managed to get it home then RAC came out and checked it, LOADS of faults on the computer from engine to lighting, to door to gearbox. They have told me not to drive the car. Report has been shared with manufacturer, finance company and dealership.

I contacted the manufacturer who have arranged it to go to a different dealership on the 30th September that's closer to us, I am awaiting them to contact me re a courtesy vehicle.

I contacted the finance company who have said as it's a different fault they can exercise their right to repair. Though noted my preference for rejection or replacement first. I contacted citizens advice who said it was up to financial ombudsman to determine if the first issue was their right to repair. I can't remember if they said it had to be the same fault again or any other fault within the first 6 months as grounds for rejection.

Does anyone have any advice about this? Can the second fault be ANY fault rather than the same fault again as grounds for rejection as an overall issue with quality?
Would the first repair in August count given I did notify the finance company it was in for repair and they seemed less than bothered, did not offer to coordinate a repair etc? CAB said the right to reject I have is to the finance company.

I potentially have this car for 4 years of which 1 year will be out of warranty... and I don't want the thing, it seems riddled with issues?

Sorry for long post!

  • You've had the car two months... first thing that springs to mind... how many miles on the clock?

"LOADS of faults" as you've put it shouts discharged auxiliary battery.

Why make/model of hybrid is this?  I'm assuming it's a mild hybrid as you mention the word "idling".
