My rather cheap Motorola seems plenty fast enough with the av loaded. Is performance really an issue for an ordinary user?
Of course it seems fast enough, for you, it's what you are used to. If you went from something like an S24 Ultra to yours then you would notice the difference. Whether it matters or not or is an issue would be the individuals perception/needs.

As long as you aren't doing anything too dubious (such sideloading unknown apps, clicking on suspicious links) then you really don't need any AV on Android. I would think that the downsides in terms of slower performance outweigh any benefits. I can't remember ever having a malware of virus problem on Android.
I have, about 3 years ago, I haven't had a Windows virus since the last century.
The play store doesn't protect against vulnerabilities.
