I haven't posted on your diary for a while but I've been trying to keep up and am really impressed with your OU plans. My job is to encourage people to go into higher education who come from 'non-traditional' backgrounds, parents didn't go to higher education, are mature students etc etc so it's great to see this. I've been looking at masters with the OU recently and got distracted looking at their undergraduate stuff and there's some really good things available.

Tbh since I've left childcare I've not missed it... the wage and working conditions are ridiculous and you get treated like crap by the parents... plus I think having 2 young children of my own is hard enough work without looking after other peoples!! lol! Plus it didn't really stretch my brain at all! I want to do something that challenges me and is worth the effort I put in.. :)

I'm so glad you didn't do the childminding; it ticks a lot of boxes for extra income and convenience but I wonder how many women get shunted into it for the short-term benefits....

I want to study full time but till my debt clears I cant afford full time or part-time day. Wanting to get into law/forensics but there aren't many courses I can do - OU molecular bio or crim, birkbeck molecular bio & uel crim. Once done first degree will be moving onto Molecular Biology with Forensic Science at Queen Mary started with Crime Scene and Forensic Investigation (collaboration with the Metropolitan Police) so will prob repeat what I've already done if I do a bio degree now I suppose.

Generally most careers don't need a SPECIFIC degree, just a decent degree. The forensic science service http://www.forensic.gov.uk/forensic_t/inside/career/qua_1.htm
    want
    "Trainee Forensic Scientist
A scientific degree, preferably biology or chemistry based with at least a 2.2 pass. Previous laboratory experience would also be beneficial."

Most of the people at the BBC have red brick university degrees in basic subjects like English and History not TV&Film Studies so it may well be that many of the courses are as useful and open up careers in other areas as a bonus.

Oh I know you don't usually need a set degree but as you have said I would need "A scientific degree, preferably biology or chemistry based with at least a 2.2 pass. Previous laboratory experience would also be beneficial".

I just love learning new things! I think it keeps you healthy to be able to exercise your brain a bit

Oh I agree completely, I think that's why I like doing AQA so much. I have lots of enthusiasm to learn things, just not right now when it is exam time!!! :)
