  • The placebo effect can also have real effects - although I'm well informed Fluoroxetine (?sp) Prozac doses of 20mg are a bit of an in joke with GPs as they have to prescribe to sign people like "stressed" teachers off (you have to be having treatment to get the time off) and are being used like smarties... The placebo effect may well work because it gives people recognition and support that they are struggling and even the open acknowledgement that like is a bit !!!!!! can be the support people need... the regular contact with healthcare professionals etc...
That's the one I was on... would've preferred some kind of councilling rather than pills though.. but of course there's not enough funding for things like that...

Well, if 20mg is a joke, I'm just going to come off it-some of the side affects are not very good...;)

But probably there are people (like you ?) who need to do something to tackle problems, head in sand doesn't work for them - so the act of acknowledging things are tough helps because it means you are aware and not stressed about pretending things are normal or ok (?). Whether the drugs have a bio-chemical effect is irrelevent if it means you function differently as a result of the process of going through a referral etc... and some people in some of the studies did have bio-chemical changes, the revelations are that some people have had no effects but the drug companies didn't include those trials... interestingly they didn't find it in children they were found to have real effects and less placebo and children would be less likely to have psychological associations

I had counselling - it was crap - I get more sense and advice out of you lot. Give me happy pills any day. I don't find an hour of talking to a stranger about how I was never good enough for my parents very helpful. I know WHY I'm a anxious wreck with no self esteem, thanks. :o

I didn't say that in your case though (I'm not a doctor and I don't know your history etc) and you shouldn't without doing it under medical supervision; If you don't want to carry on don't just stop - go see the GP and say you want to stop, side effects and if you want counselling try and push for that (that takes more resources for them). The studies showed that they were having little effect in some unpublished trials and being unpublished meant the effectiveness is probably overestimated but there are trials where they are effective in some people.

What they find is a joke is that they often have no effect or little harmful if unnecessary so they are having their prescription demanded by a whole load of people who don't need them who know that the prescription opens up a whole load of work-related benefits and it's easier to comply.
