A proper national identity card would solve all these problems, but politicians kept saying that British people wouldn't stand for it.

Part of that is that it would be new, and imposing anything new is always challenging.

I certainly wouldn't want it, not in the previous guise anyway. It reached the point it was going to be more expensive than a passport, while serving a similar purpose.

After Brexit any hope of using it for travel has gone, so I'd need both that and a passport.

I suspect that is because the mandarins tell the politicians that the public wouldn't stand for it, when really it is they what have reservations.

If it is exclusion you are concerned about, what about digital exclusion?

Despite getting myself a photo ID driving license I still cannot get the process to recognise me! I have tried at least 10 times over various weeks with no success. When it lists those addresses none of these apply to me so it might be that is what is now failing to allow me to be recognised!? Though having lived at my current address for over 20 years surely a credit check should be straightforward? Or is just a very glitchy Government bit of software?

You got it. Plus a bit of empire building on the DWP's behalf, insisting on creating their own parallel system instead of using your existing login.

Do you have access to your credit report to see what addresses that thinks you have? Something like https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/creditclub/ might give you some kind of clue.

I am with Creditkarma and everything looks fine.
  • The issue seems to be that people don't like that the Gateway Login doesn't work on this new DWP service, from what I have learnt the Government is setting up this new OneLogin, as the Gov Gateway was setup by HMRC, not the whole government. The Office of public Guardians has joined DWP and if you hold a Power of Attorney for anyone since Covid you'll notice that they have changed their online system to the same as DWP for benefit customers on Universal Credit and Pensioners on DWP's new pension system to sign in online. If you've called DWP recently you might have someone clued up like the person I've talked to, seems they have several systems as they said some are on the Old Legacy system, some are new rules and some are on their latest system which now has the online portal which DWP started in 2023. If you are on their newest system getting the single tier pension (£230.25 per week) then you most likely are on this system but if you reached pension age before 6/4/2016 then you most likely won't be unless they get the new system to take everyone else on to the new system. I had a nice long chat with this lad who seemed to know lots.

It was a horrible idea. As planned it was supposed to be voluntary, meaning nothing could be set up that relied on you having one. And even if you did there was no suggestion it would replace anything like passport, driving licence, or even library tickets or bus pass. It would just be a parallel empire.

Hopeless public administration. Great if you want some ancient Greek poetry translated into Mandarin. Not so good if you want effective strategic decision making.
