Fridge stopped working after only 1 year and a half out of guarantee

I bought a  no frost fridge freezer about 1 year and a half ago, which had good reviews. It has only 1 year of guarantee. Unfortunately the freezer stopped working completely and the fridge is not cooling enough, to give you an idea, on the coldest setting on the fridge the butter is still soft.

I phoned the customer service and they want £ 100 only to look at it which I find outrageous.

Just to let you know I tried already switching off the appliance for 3 days and nothing.

The light works and it makes the typical noises but just as I said not working.

I am not sure what to do. I feel gutted I have to pay £ 100 only for being looked at then plus whatever costs repairing, not sure if even worth it...

Do I have any rights?

Thank you very much,

Kind regards

    Hello OP
After 6 months burden of proof is with your self and consumer rights are with the retailer (rather than manufacturer, unless they are one and the same).
Have an appliance repair company out to inspect and put on paper what is wrong and if possible the cause, if it's an issue that isn't caused by user error/misuse you can go to the retailer to insist upon a repair or replacement and if they won't provide one a refund (reduced to account for use, typically time since delivery vs produt lifespan) and in either case they shoud cover the cost of the inspection.
You can of course go to the retailer before getting the inspection but they are likely to either request one or fob you off to the manufacturer.
Which retailer did you buy from?
Did you pay on any kind of credit?

I bought it from AO, It is a Fridgemaster. No, no credit. I bought it online.
Where should I find an appliance repair company? How much would it cost?
The retailer gave me the customer service phone from the manufacturer.

    Thank you
  • I think it's a time for new fridge with longer warranty this time.

When my one died <£200 all repairs wanted like £80+ per hour plus parts - which could have been in hundreds..
  • Any white goods repair person will do.  Not sure of cost but I'd guess about £100 because they'll need to attend and take some time to inspect it and then write a brief report.
  • Thanks for the replies. Is there any point in complaining first? When you buy a fridge you are expecting to last longer than just one year and and half...

Depends.  It may result in a change of stance, but so far they're not doing anything to contravene consumer laws so asking you to have it inspected is reasonable.  The downside is speed.  Going through their complaints process will just waste time if it proves fruitless.  Have you got a second fridge, or are you requiring a resolution as soon as possible?

Unfortunately not. So I basically need to go to the shops almost every day, o eat foods that do not require fridge, so I would need this sorted asap
  • Makes sense to agree to an inspection, or commission your own, then.  Otherwise you're just delaying a potential resolution.
