Compensation is due, but the question is how much?

Interesting one here, I've had a search and can't find any answers but I'm sure the situation must have arose before.

I recently flew back from Tokyo to London, with a stopover in Paris. The connecting flight (CDG > LHR) was cancelled whilst I was waiting at the gate, and as it was the last flight of the day there was a 10 hour delay until the next flight. The airline (Air France) put us in a hotel overnight and then re-booked onto the first flight the following day.

Clearly there is compensation due here, but my question is how much? The flight was booked as a single trip, Tokyo to London, and both flights are on the same booking reference/ticked.

So my question is, am I entitled to compensation for:

a) The CDG > LHR flight, 346km, so €250

or

b) The whole journey, NRT > LHR, 9590km, so
€600

I feel, given the length of the journey which should have been 18 hours and ended up being 29 hours that I am owed the latter, but I fear that the airline may only offer the lower amount of compensation.

Does anyone have previous experience of this? Let me know your thoughts

There is no clearly, it depends on the reason for the delay. Why was the flight cancelled? It also depends how you booked the flights, direct with Air France?
  • If compensation is payable, and as noted that is dependent on the reason, then it is decided law it is for the full journey provided it was booked as a through ticket

Surely that doesn't affect the value of, or eligibility for, any compensation, given that it was a through booking on a single ticket reference?
