Despite 4 minute warnings, and nuclear dread hanging over us, we were a generation that really believed we could do anything.

I'd like to be that confident and knowledgeable again!

We were also immortal or thought we were- given the risks we took and survived. I was telling one of my children recently about experimenting with making petrol bombs. She didn't quite know whether to believe me or not.

Okay there was a falseness to all of that, far too many of my peers didn't survive the risks, especially from driving too fast, and we didn't know nearly as much as we thought we did, but it all felt good at the time.....
  • Tinned Sweetheart dessert.
Was stocked in the shop on a caravan site in Wales - just whisked content of can with milk.

Miss ? Television, well decent television. Saturday nights whole family round the 24" in the corner, Morecambe and Wise, Generation Game, Two Ronnies, Benny Hill. Not to mention Saturday morning Swap Shop and the Banana Splits, Sing along !!  One banana, two banana, three banana, four....................

Now the only time I turn it on is for Cricket, Racing and the odd football match, if it wasn't for the wife, i wouldn't have a TV

A family Sunday lunch was a proper event, German wine was the norm, wine glasses were swapped for tokens from the petrol station
We still have some petrol glasses.

    Green Shield stamps, anyone?

I used to also catch the bus on my own to school aged 8 upwards (working class area) and had to cross a busy A road to do it.
However I suspect it is no more dangerous nowadays for kids to be out and about on their own, that it was then. Everybody is just more risk aware nowadays.
. Then many were not wearing seatbelts, drink driving, smoking heavily etc
Population was a lot lower in the mid-60s, there were much fewer cars on the road, and it was expected that people walked everywhere.

Spangles, Opal Mints, Sunday icecream in a bowl from the van.
Street bonfire nights at the end of our road & dads with fireworks in tins.
Sledging down the school field & snowdrifts taller than 5-yo me (we lived in the Pennines).
2p bus fares anywhere in GM.
Spotting new registration cars on our August holiday to visit grandparents in the North East, sharing a bedroom with 2 brothers & giggling all night.
