What do you miss from your childhood?

I was thinking the other day of what used to be better, or what isn't available anymore.

Eg, Spangles, Fruit Polos.

Anyone else got any childhood favourites (or indeed not so favourites)

Sweet Maries.  A lovely type of chocolate bar that was fudge, rolled in caramel, rolled in nuts and coated with chocolate.  Can't even get them anymore when I go back to my country of birth.  Sigh.

    Banana chews.
Just as well they've gone because my teeth aren't up to it these days.
Treacle suet pudding with extra treacle and lashings of butter on shreddies or real crumpets -  absoloutely no guilt in those days.
Strangely my arteries seem to be fine.....................

My mums suet puddings, meat and potato, blackberry and apple

On the case of what used to be better.

We felt safe walking the streets for starters

We had a great life despite rationing

    No ambulance chasers

  • What used to be better:
No social media with all its negativity.
Being able to walk the streets aged 7 ish, on own and go on bus toprimary school (1950s, middle class area).  My grandmother's cheese and water biscuits Saturday snack with crudities (a stay up treat).
A very small dry sherry at aged 7 -10 when neighbour got invited in for pre Sunday lunch drinks - so grown up! (can't remember if he stayed for lunch or not).
The roaring open fire in the lounge.

    What can't get any more:
    Some of the above.
I don't miss much - I am happy with change but I use change to suit me.  So I won't use social media unless I have a proven need.  Then delete.
    Not sweets.
Maybe the family Sunday lunch I had when a child.  But I didn't do that with my children, so maybe not enough.
    Awful wine.

Toasting crumpets in front of a real fire, although I don't miss a lack of central heating! We had a two bar electric fire fixed to the wall in my parents' bedroom, and that's where we used to huddle to get dressed!

On the whole, I would not want to be young now ...

I am not sure if I'm thinking of the same thing, but I'm sure you can still get soft ones, like the pink shrimps, pretty much pure sugar but not at all chewy!

Aniseed balls and pear drops out of a glass jar on shelves behind the counter

    Some for a farthing
  • For all nostalgics, the Footage Detectives on Talking Pictures at 5 pm on Sundays is great for info from viewers about sweet and savoury foods from our childhood that are no longer + lots of old footage

Not all my childhood treats have been discontinued but are not the same as I remember e.g I bought a pack of plain digestive biscuits recently but they were so sweet I could not eat them.

A favourite childhood memory from the early 1950s is dodging waves crashing over the end of the groyne on Brighton beach, often unsuccessfully so that we left very wet seats on the bus going home.  We had such freedom then to wander the town without adult supervision and indeed were encouraged to do so all day, packed lunch provided.

  • Sparkle lemon ice lollies, a mint feast was a treat, not like today when a magnum seems to be an every day ice cream for a 5 year old!

A family Sunday lunch was a proper event, German wine was the norm, wine glasses were swapped for tokens from the petrol station.
A Sunday tea was a buffet with a huge pot of tea.
