I'll second the supermarket.....loads of them in there and cheap with the added bonus of being instantly available...Failing that Amazon basics as also suggested.

    OP here

Thank you for all your replies.

    I think I'll buy ..
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/384240995689?itmmeta=01J7BFC30A7Z0CS33JA2AH9SC6&hash=item59768c4d69:g:nqEAAOSwOGhgpzHM

I already have an Anker cable which I use to transfer files to my computer from my wife's old iPhone .. after getting advice on this forum a few months ago

Now today, she has bought a new iPhone, with a USBC connection, so we'll need two cables

the one I've chosen is direct from Anker

An earlier one recommended by Emmia is slightly longer, but from Amazon direct, rather than Anker

Am I right in unthinking buying from Anker would be better ?

I tend to order from Amazon for convenience, but going direct would be fine.

The listing had shorter versions too.

I would always avoid the very cheapest USB cables as they just don't last. Worth paying a little more for some better built ones, ideally those with a braided cable but no need to go for an expensive one if you only want to do charging. Still no need to pay more than a few pounds each.

Apologies for going a bit off topic, but when cables are listed as USB 3.1, 3.2 etc is that just to do with maximum charging speed or is there more to it?

Those refer to the data transfer speeds, not charging.
Some USB cables, particularly cheap ones, are for charging only and cannot be used for data tranfer, they leave the data wires (and sometimes even the data connection pins) out so as to keep the manufactring costs down.
eg. If you buy something such as a rechargable vape, or a Power Bank, then it doesn't need data transfer, so the cable that comes with it will usually be a charging only cable.

The naming of USB standards has been a confusing mess for years but, yes, basically it has to do with speed though the cable itself won't make a transfer quicker unless the devices at both ends support the higher speed. For  most uses USB 3.1 (5 Gbps) should be enough.

It gets even more confusing when you consider power delivery (PD) and video over USB. If you want to power a laptop and drive a monitor then the cheap USB cables won't cut it and you need to check the specs of the more expensive ones. USB is anything but universal.
