USB A to USB C cable

I have a Nokia phone which takes a USB C cable to charge it.

I still have the original cable at home, which I leave here, but I now wish to buy an additional cable to take with me when I'm out 'n about .. the local trains and buses have USB A sockets for charging phones. Today my phone died, which is why I'm buying a cable now

Looking online it seems many listings include different cables for different phones .. all seem to be for various Samsung phones .. surely a USB A to USB C is a standard cable ?

.. or am I wrong ??

is it worth buying a branded cable ?

You are correct, all you need for charging is a basic USB A to USB C cable.

I've been using a cheap cable from ebay for years with no issue.

    Edit : It was 99p !

On sites like ebay they list phones and you select the model, but often one model is a cheaper price than the others so they appear nearer the top when you sort by price. Just go though the list and pick the cheapest price as it's just the same cable if it's listed as A to C

The answer is yes and no.

You don't need a branded cable like Sony, Samsung, Nokia etc. But equally you don't want a complete Chinese knock off which has never been through any testing and could burst into flames.

You want something in the middle. Something like Amazon Basics, Anker, uGreen, Iniu. Shouldn't cost more than £5.

Personally I buy Anker cables, if you're intending to put it directly into public USB sockets I'd advise one which is power only, or use a further adapter which blocks data, just when you're using public charge points.

Deal of the day: Anker USB-A to USB-C Charger Cable 2 Pack (6ft Nylon), 331 Cable, USB C to USB 2.0 Double Braided Type C Charging Cable for Samsung Galaxy S8 S8+ S9 S9+, HTC 10, Sony XZ, LG V20 G5 G6, Xiaomi 5 https://amzn.eu/d/1Eab3IZ

Up to the OP.. Personally I prefer to have certainty,  so I use an adapter with any publicly accessible points.

An option is to get yourself a Power Bank to charge the phone, and other USB charged devices, when out and about.
I got one of these last year, it's great for the job and fits in your pocket. It's about the same size as most mobile phones.
It comes with a USB-A to C cable and a nice mesh carry/storage bag.

My previous Moto G7 would charge using any old USB C cable ... however my newer G31 is much more 'fussy' and will only charge with some cables!

Just pick one up from the supermarket, pound shop or the likes of Home Bargains, B&M, etc. You can make a bit of a judge on the quality then.
