    Filling the junction box with dry air seems like a perfectly logical suggestion to someone who has problems with moist air in their box (ooh matron).
    Do you think a typical junction box would still be hermetically sealed after it had fixing screw holes drilled through the back and cables poked into it through rubber boots or glands?

    Most decent junction boxes (such as the Wiska Combi box) have the mounting holes outside of the chamber on each of the four corners. Your screws won't break the seal. If you then use the proper 20mm glands to suit your cable diameter - that's more than enough to have a watertight box.
