Help required with BT Sim in Mobile

I got one of the freebie sim cards from BT with £10 credit. My Nokia 3410 (yes I know it's old!) is unlocked, but when I put the sim in the phone I get the following:

Welcome to BT we notice you have a new phone when would you like to update it?

Now/Later - I press now

It then goes to a screen saying Requesting...... and there it stays

When I don't do the above and it goes to the usual screen it shows no signal whatsoever but I'd have thought I'd have a signal it's not as if I'm in the middle of nowhere or anything

Anyone offer any suggestions? Thanks in advance

It says on the leaflet that it came with that the sim should arrive already activated. I've gone to the website to register the number and it says, make sure the phone is switched on and they will send a code, but I can't get the phone past the point mentioned above so I guess I'll never get the text message with the code

I don't seem to be able to do anything with it without the phone freezing up. I've exited out of the pallava of above and gone to message settings but the phone then just goes blank

Where should the above number be, I've got voice mailbox number?. When I select Message settings it just goes blank

Also to add, when I dial a number after ages saying calling.... it then says no network coverage, so perhaps I don't get a signal here

I've put my virgin sim in and everything ok there - it has a different message centre no. but I guess it will as it's Virgin not bt

With my usual Virgin sim, I can go through and get the message centre no. With the BT sim all I get to is Messages, then message settings, then I just get a blank screen

I've just done 2 sims without problems. Maybe you sim is faulty, if you have not yet found a way to rectify it.
