constant broadband dropout in evenings??

hi folks, wounder if anyone can help.

i have pc, windows xp, orange broadband, hardwired with speedtouch 330 modem.

for 2 or 3 weeks now i've been suffering constant broadband dropout, but as stated, only in the evenings by the looks of it so far. daytime allways seems fine, apart from dropout when phone is picked up or hung up (i could cope if it was just that).

everything was fine for about 3 years and theres been no change to any wiring. i've been trying to get help off orange, so far i've reinstalled new s/w, and fitted new modem and filter but still exactly the same. connection is lost, the adsl light flashes several times then goes steady, during this time i can reconnect but only for about 1 minute then its flashing again. bt say the line is fine.

orange say they are doing more checks etc but i don't have much faith so thought i'd ask here

thanks in advance,
bockster.

Orange system overload, take a look at this comparison site, Orange are third from bottom.

Do you mean when you use your phone it ALSO drops the connection?

Sounds like a wiring/filter probelm. I think people get confused with thier filters.

Let me know your wiring and filters and devices layout eg mine is:

    Master BT Socket
    .Double Socket:
    ..Socket 1:
    ...Filter 1
    ....ADSL: > Nothing
    ....TEL > Telephone
    ..Socket 2:
    ...Extension Lead
    ....Filter 2
    .....ADSL > ROUTER
    .....TEL > Sky Box

Also extension leads tend to get damaged over time unless BT installed them.

Dropout when phone is picked up or hung up suggests filters faulty or incorrectly set up if BT say line ok.
    http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/connectionprobs.htm

Loss of connection in the evening suggests low SNR margin http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/lowSNR.htm

Read through that stuff and get a hold of the Dr SpeedTouch tool so we can see your line stats as per the article Speedtouch 330 aka "The Frog" http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.htm

Might be a sync problem... What speed are you supposed to get and what speed do you get

We are with the silly local ISP (they have a monopoly) and several times a day the router tells us that it has lost the connection to the internet, then reconnects about a minute later. This doesn't sound too bad, but try having it happen when you are streaming video (BBC's iPlayer refuses to resume), or halfway through downloading a big file, or chatting on MSN when you suddenly get kicked off and lose track of your conversation! It makes me mad.

The ISP told us it is a problem with our extension cables, so I did a little test by unplugging the phone at the first socket into the house and plugged the modem into that. The same problems occurred!

Why are telecom companies so annoying? I think you should be very thankful that you can actually vote with your feet, unlike us...
  • You must use the test socket behind the master socket to ensure you eliminate any faulty internal wiring. Nothing to do with your ISP if your own wiring is poor. http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/troubleshooting.htm
Extension cables not really advisable for optimal connection.

A test socket behind the master socket? If it's what it sounds like then it was installed by the same company because their monopoly includes our telephones.
  • Don't think you can really sound off against anyone until you get your own wiring in order.
Granted many ISPs are very poor in the support area but you can help yourself by following Kitz's advice in the above links.
The Master line box is the demarcation point between your equipment and BT's Exchange Line, so everything on your side is your problem, everything on BT's side, including the Master box itself, is BT's problem.

I don't think that this is down to BT on this occasion, probably Karoo, the worst ISP in the country, if the USER ID is a clue.
