Water tank in loft

One question that hasn't been asked yet - Is there any water in the tank ?

If there is only an inch or two at the bottom, it would no longer be in use.

Full of brown murky water, the central heating system could probably benefit from a chemical flush, refilled, and dosed with inhibitor.

Doubtful as flush toilets work by releasing water into the bowl in a short time to carry out the flush effect. A long run from tank to pan won't be efficient at this.

For refilling the cisterns, not instead of them.

In 40 years of property renovation, I have never seen cisterns fed from anything other than main or the large cold water tank. This looks like a vented heating system header tank.

I completely agree with you.  I've seen multiple cold water tanks once or twice before, but I don't think this is one of them.

I tend to agree, but a picture from only one angle means it isn't possible to rule out a coffin tank (used for hot/cold water supply) seen end-on.
