Water tank in loft

Options
Hello, I think this is a water tank in my loft-  photo was taken at a distance.

Is it possible to find out how old it is?   eg ?date of installation on the tank (where would I look), ?council records

thanks @TadleyBaggie.  Do you know how would I go about confirming its an expansion tank or what it is supplying?

Take a look at your boiler and enter the make & model in the search box here -> https://www.ncm-pcdb.org.uk/sap/pcdbsearch.jsp?pid=26 - That will give you a range of dates when the boiler was manufactured.

Could be tank for supplying water to toilets.
Flush a toilet and perhaps you could hear it filling

Follow the pipes and see where they go. That can be a challenge, but it's useful to know where the various pipes run.
  • Probably not a relevant question - but why do you need to know how old the tank is ?

Doubtful as flush toilets work by releasing water into the bowl in a short time to carry out the flush effect. A long run from tank to pan won't be efficient at this.

For refilling the cisterns, not instead of them.

In 40 years of property renovation, I have never seen cisterns fed from anything other than main or the large cold water tank. This looks like a vented heating system header tank.

I completely agree with you.  I've seen multiple cold water tanks once or twice before, but I don't think this is one of them.
