In principle a great idea. Commercialism (as usual) makes it a complete waste of time.
Commercialism (as usual) makes it viable. Unless you (and all your friends/contacts) would like to shift to Premium non-ad Facebook at, say, £200 a year?

  • I will never post on FB or Twitter.  I have real friends in the real world.  I do not share my life with random strangers on social media.  On this MSE forum we can be ourselves but from behind a screen name & our personal details are largely irrelevant to our contributions.  I could see the value of FB when it started for distant families or interest groups to have a meeting place & I do look at public pages as in many instances FB has replaced what would have been websites of interest to me.  If these sites were not marketing tools or data mining opportunities they would serve no purpose to their owners.

Controlling what you see on Facebook involves adjusting various settings to tailor your news feed and notifications. Here’s a summary of the key steps you can take:

    1. Ad Preferences: Modify your ad settings to control the types of ads you see based on your activity on and off Facebook.

    2. News Feed Preferences: Customize your news feed to prioritize who to see first, unfollow people to hide their posts, reconnect with people you've unfollowed, and discover new pages.

    3. Friend Lists: Use lists to organize friends and manage who sees what you post and whose posts you see.

    4. Privacy Settings: Adjust who can see your posts, who can send you friend requests, and how you can be found on Facebook.

    5. Notification Settings: Change settings for how often you receive notifications and what you get notified about.

    6. Unfollow and Hide: Choose to unfollow friends to stop seeing their posts without unfriending them. You can also hide posts from your news feed and mark them as uninteresting.

I have some links to groups and searches set up so I go straight to them.
I am, however, continually aware that I am freeloading on their platform, so I mustn't grumble to much.
Whilst it's true they may get some info from/about me, I generally stick to the areas of interest I go there for.

    Well, yes.
However, if I find it intrusive or annoying then It'll have a negative effect.

    That'll be it.
  • Hmmm. Negative advertising  well ot works on some who are perhaps more gullible or do not appreciate how the advertisers work!
More Heedtheadvice cannot stand but fora remember the advert for "Daisy Daisy Daisy" cos it annoys her.....
....but does not buy it or want it!

Like wise I am also annoyed with systems monitoring me online, tolerating some only when I decide it is worth itbut it is exceediny rare I use Facebook ( only when there is a link to something of interest at best a few times a year). Data still gathered but now seldom annoyed.

Likewise hate all the teaser messages emails etc. that 'link' to activity or purchases. Vast majority if not all are ignored. An activity that cannot be avoided online but still has been going on offine too via snail mail and clu b cards etc. A fact of modern life for, well , eons in one form or another.
