High gas consumption.

  • I have now been told there is definitely no gas leak , and my boiler has been tested and no problem there.
I have reported back to Octopus, will now see what happens next.
Anyone any tips on how to deal with Octopus, it's obviously a faulty smart meter.
    Why?

You've tested that the meter doesn't count up when there's no gas use.  That rules out one way that the meter could be faulty (and that's the way we often find out).

What you mean is "it might be a faulty smart meter because I can't remember doing anything that might have used more gas".

You can get the meter tested, but if it's not faulty then you'll have to pay for the test.
Exactly, thank you for pointing it out.

  • Hi SG2! Have you been back over your use to see when the readings might have spiked, and can you then go back over the various things you might have done on those days to try to work out whether there is any rhyme or reason to it? It might even  be that for example you can see that some of the spikes occurred at times when you have not even been in the property, which might help to add context.

It could of course be that the meter is faulty but only intermittently - and as others have found out, that can be a lot harder to prove!

I suspect Octopus may prove to be easier to deal with this than some other suppliers, at least.

  • Just coming back with an update , after 4 weeks of emails and not really getting the gist of my complaint. I left a trust pilot review which seemed to have gotten me to someone on the management team. Her emails have been much better , I have received £30 in compensation for the minute , it would also appear that Octopus think I have an old meter and not a smart meter . Things are improving and giving me hope it will get sorted .

Is this going to be an imperial -v- metric thing, I wonder…

You should be able to tell from your bills - have a look and see what is said about both the units consumed (m3 or ft3) and the conversion factor. It may well turnout to be as easy as that!

Just to be clear it's units of m3 or 100ft3.

After having a new gas smart meter fitted that works last week , I have now also been compensated for the extra gas I allegedly used . I am now a happy customer . I'm glad I didn't take the first answer to my complaint.
