Money Moral Dilemma: Should I split my job referral bonus with the friend I referred?

  • I would split the bonus 50:50 with them if they agree to split their salary 50:50 with you.

    That sounds fair...
  • The money was for the referral, it's yours.  No question.
  • Like I think a couple of others have shared; I got a job through a friend and they received the bonus (iro £4,000 iirc). They took me out for a curry. I was more than pleased with that because the job was excellent, paid well, and I really needed it. I had no issues with my friend taking the bonus to themselves!
  • Your friend may get their own bonus in future if they refer someone new later down the line, so I would keep it but buy them something worthwhile as a Welcome gift.

I don't feel that there is any need to split the referral bonus with him but I do think that, as you have asked the question, you feel maybe you should. So, why not treat them to something they would like e.g. a good slap up meal, a trip to the cinema, a day out at taking part in or spectating at sport they enjoy etc etc - just as a way to celebrate them getting the job?
  • Is anyone else struggling to get past the concept of someone getting a 'refferal bonus ' for sharing details of a job vacancy? I had no idea this was a thing - sounds utterly bizarre! Is this common?

Yes, this is very common. Saves the company going to a recruitment agent.

The referral bonus is for you referring your friend. Keep it yourself, you shouldn't feel any guilt for doing so, but share it if you feel like it.
  • I think it were me, I'd consider giving them 10 percent. You wouldn't really notice the difference, and it would make their day(/month). 😄

Bear in mind that they'll probably become aware of the referral bonus at some point working at the company so they'll realise you got a decent sum for it.

(Also, I am genuinely looking for a job asap!) 😉

I wouldn't share it, I keep my employment away from social media.

OP: Keep the money, they probably wouldn't have the gotten the job without you.
