Someone put in a good word for me and I got the job.  There was no referral fee/bonus paid to anyone but I have never forgotten that gesture and still feel indebted to that person as it came at a time when I really needed that help.

Enjoy your referral fee in full!

The bonus was for you referring a friend.
You did your bit so the employer paid you for the results of your efforts on social media.

What is the dilemma?  Sounds like a win, win, win to me.

There are too many things going on in life to be anxious about stuff like this.

Enjoy the bonus you received in whatever way you like and get on with your life.

I absolutely disagree with the wrong comments on here about it being ‘greed’ or ‘deflection’ when referring to needing the money.

It is your money. You earned it. Your friend got a job from the referral - and I’m sure they are more than appreciative of the opportunity.

Don’t feel guilty for doing your job and helping a friend.

No! It's yours. Your friend has a nice new job as part of it, that is their "bonus"! Also - no matter how much you have earnt, you will pay tax on that - your friend isn't paying the tax.
  • If you're heart is telling you that you don't want to gain through your friend, you could spend a portion to buy them a well thought out gift that they may not be able to afford/justify buying. This would give you the joy of giving, show your friend how you value them and would likely stengthen your friendship.

so they get a job out of it? and you want to give them some of YOUR entitlement.
Give it  away if it makes you happy, that is my recommendation, because of that, you also now need to share some with me, that's how your reasoning works

No they got the job, you get the bonus
  • Is your friend going to be paying a share of the tax that you paid on that bonus?
  • I think the money is yours as a reward from your employer for referring your friend. I would think your friend is very grateful to you for referring him, and perhaps in time he will also refer someone for a job with this Company and will receive a bonus. Stop worrying, enjoy your reward and good luck with the move.
  • Cant believe how many comments I had to read before I found one that said (share 50/50), after reading these comments/reasons there are some good points why some say keep the money it's yours.
The question I would ask myself is how much of a good friend are they??
A good friend I would say yes share the love.
Just someone you know? I would say no you've already done them a good turn by putting job on their radar.
