One other thing there is a free android app called spectroid that will allow you to visualise the noise and check the frequency. May exist on apple too I don't know.

  • So you're sensitive to noise, the engineer found no fault and it's not an issue for your partner?
    Everything seems louder at night.

What are the two temperatures on the display?

When the noise is not present does pressing the super freeze/boost button start the noise (as this is effectively bypassing the thermostat and keeps the compressor running)

From personal experience I know two medical conditions that can make the perception of fridge noises louder (especially at night). One is tinnitus and the other is people who's hearing is effected by chemotherapy, there are bound to be others.
The temperature on the display read -18 for the freezer and 2 degrees for the fridge, the fridge inside is about 4 degrees .Iv'e used 2 thermometers one is like a dial the other is a food thermometer immersed in a glass of water. The temp in the fridge is usually 2-3 degrees above the external display. If i set the display to 4 degrees the temp inside is 6-7 degrees. The noise has been going most of the day,I will test the boost function tomorrow morning ,usually the noise has stopped first thing in the morning. Cheers

I have nothing useful to add. But you have my sympathy, I used to hear our fridge 2 rooms away whilst my partner was blissfully unaware. We put something underneath so now it's bearable most of the time but it's still a deep version of nails on a chalkboard to me.

I agree, I find it hard to believe that a compressor would run for so long.

It must be quite annoying for you to hear this noise. Have you considered that there might be another reason you are hearing it?
When the engineer came the fridge was quiet, he had to turn it off/on and leave the doors open for it to start. The noise is worse at quieter times especially at night.
What do you mean another reason , please elaborate
I think there is a reason it bothers me more than someone else if that's what you meant
As others have pointed out, there are some conditions that mean you are sensitive to noise. In my case I was absolutely sure that I could hear the fridge at night. It didn’t bother me, but I knew logically it couldn’t be the fridge and no one else in the house could hear it. It turned out that I’d become aware of the sound of my own blood circulating near the ear due to a combination of age related hearing changes and high blood pressure. Both easily sorted.

But there’s also the possibility that it’s something else that’s causing low frequency noise. Because it’s low frequency then only people with sensitive hearing will detect. It also travels long distances. Sources include, electricity transmission, rotary engines, pumps. See here for what can be done. https://www.ioa.org.uk/sites/default/files/briefing_note_low_frequency_noise_annoyance.pdf

Just pull the machine out a touch and/or move to the left/right and see what effect it has.  Trial and error.

According to the manual the appliance has to have at least 5cm clearance at the rear. No doubt at the sides too. If not there could be insufficient air circulation for the condensor and thus the heat from the contents to be dissipated.
Possibly, as has aleady been suggested, close proximity to walls etc. might well transmit sounds/vibration from the compressor unit.
The fridge/freezer I just replaced didn't have an external condensor. Both sides of the cabinet became quite hot when the compressor was running.

Thanks everyone for all your advice and suggestions. Last night at about 9 pm in frustration  i turned the fridge off for 10 seconds , i did this once before and it stayed quiet for a long time. It's  now been nearly 24 hours without any humming, both doors have been opened many times today.I can't remember how long it stayed quiet last time i turned it off/on, but it's usually humming 80% of the time, so this is very odd.  The fridge is level ,but  i haven't checked for anything vibrating as there has been no bad noise. The temperatures have stayed good too. This is what i would expect a new fridge to sound like . Sorry if i sound like an obsessive idiot, , I will see what tomorrow brings, cheers

"Sorry if i sound like an obsessive idiot"
I am just that. Mine is powered through a Tapo plug which monitors energy used and shows on/off frequency.
Straight after installing I have constantly checked the app. to see when it's controlled on and off in spite of the temperatures being perfect. B)
" i turned the fridge off for 10 seconds".
Be careful. Whether it applies to yours, my manual advises waiting 5 minutes, after unplugging/switching off, before reconnecting power.
Similarly, with many fridges and freezers, the manufacturers advise, when initially installed/positioned, to leave for 2 or 3 hours before the initial switch on. Otherwise it could damage the compressor. The same applies to that 5 minutes.

"When you would like to re-operate your fridge freezer after
disconnecting its plug from the socket, wait for at least 5 minutes to insert the plug again so that no damage is incurred by the compressor."

"When using your fridge for the first time, or after
transportation, keep it in an upright position for at least 3
hours before plugging into the mains. This allows efficient
operation and prevents damage to the compressor."
