My clematis doesn't flower

Late last summer I planted 2 clematis (clematia?) and they are thriving.  One is more vigorous than the other but they are doing well.  But no flowers at all.

Is this a thing with clematis that they don't flower the first year?  Or am I missing doing something?

For what it's worth they were both £1.99 specials from that L German supermarket so I'm not out of pocket and can get something else.  No info left from last year of course.

Have you been over feeding it?
I probably give it another year because if they were small when you got them, they may take a little while to settle in,

    Looks healthy enough.

I always struggle with clematis. They like their roots cool and the top hot.

I think yours will flower next year. Don't over-do the nitrogen fertiliser.

I agree with elsien. I've had a star jasmine that is yet to flower after 3 years. It could be a case of the plant putting down deeper roots at the expense of flowering.

It's unusual for a healthy clematis not to flower at all.  Do you know which variety it is?  Any chance it could be a winter flowerer?

With that leaf shape it could be Clematis armandii. They flower in the winter.

Just checked the RHS website and it says early to mid-spring. But I had one at my last house and it flowered in the winter. Some have creamy white flowers, others pale pink.

Thanks all - no chance of over fertilising as I don't go into that for any of my plants!!  (I know, I'm cruel)

I think one package had purple and the other pink on the labels but they could actually be silver with orange polka dots for all I know!!  Lidl doesn't have the best quality for plants or labelling so I'll have to wait and see.   Pleased to see that one has risen this year to about 6 feet up and the other (gets more sun) to about 4.

Meanwhile my black eyed susan that I got in the spring (also Lidl) are doing marvellous - both the orange and yellow are still scrambling along my porch railing from their pot!!  I shall try to put the pot in the greenhouse once it starts to die back in October or so and see if I can coax it back next spring.  Unlikely in this climate but I have had reseeding in the past.

I've got to say I'm suspicious of the plant. It's amazingly healthy and dense growth. I've not seen Clematis like that. Mostly it long tendrils that wind around everything (well they have to in my garden)  but the foliage isn't that shape or the leaves so tight.
I wonder what would come up if you used the plant app or google photo match?

It's always good to have a mystery plant in the garden imo. Makes life more interesting :)

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

I agree, I have 2 x montana, 1 x alpina & 3 x named 'big' flower varieties and none of them look like your plant.
    Wrong leaves & wrong stems!
I don't have any winter flowering  ones so can't help there.

is it climbing of its own accord or have you tied it in?
