I am hoping someone one there can help.  I have a 2020 c4 ST that will not start.  The car had issues with the tailgate for a couple of months where it would get stuck and then eventually just wouldn’t open.  The only other issue it had was water would come in through the airbag badge above the driver’s door.  The car has done approx 24,500 miles and has full service history, properly maintained.  I was driving the car on Thurs 18th July and everything was fine.  That same evening it just wouldn’t start.  Ironically, the car was due to be traded in on the Friday 😤 it has been tested by an independent mechanic and at the Citroen dealership and no diagnosis found.  The car is just non responsive.  No battery fault either.  I am stuck now as the finance company say it’s not their issue as the car wasn’t faulty when I bought it and the insurance company won’t help as it’s not been in an accident.  The dealership are charging £144 an hour to strip the car back and only doing it 1 hour a week.  Meanwhile I’m left without a car and paying finance. Blackhorse advised me I could do voluntary termination but upon receiving the letter I can only do this if the car is roadworthy.  I don’t see why I should pay for these repairs which  hood cost thousands before they even know what’s wrong with it when it’s of no fault of my own.  Can anyone help please!!

    When did you buy it?

Where did you buy it from?

Have you had it from new?

Aside from the above post. Without that info no one can give any consumer advice.

I would visit some Citroen forums, where owners might have come across this before.

I would YouTube the make and model and faults.
  • Sorry I haven’t been receiving notifications.  I bought the car January 2022 from Motorpoint.  I have not had the car from new.  YouTube hasn’t helped so far and neither has the mechanics at the Citroen dealership as they can’t find a fault.  Thanks

Unfortunately for you, it's because that is the way that the Consumer Rights Act works.

Since you have had the vehicle for more than 6 months the onus is on you to show that the reason why it won't start is because of a fault which was present in some form when you purchased it.
For example, if it is a petrol car and the reason is because you had accidentally filled up with diesel, you would have no claim against the dealer or finance house.

Neither the dealer nor Blackhorse will do anything until you find out what the fault is and can show some evidence that on balance of probabilities it was present 2½ years ago.

You say an independent mechanic you tried couldn't find anything wrong. Some mechanics might be good with spanners but not so much with electrics. Perhaps an auto-electrician would be more successful?

Does not say much for a main dealer...With diagnostic equipment.

  • No both the mobile mechanic or the Citroen dealership can find a fault with the car.  Citroen Customer Carr have washed their hands of it.  I would have hoped they at least recalled the vehicle.  I have agreed a figure with the finance company to hand the car back to them which is not ideal but otherwise I don’t know what else to do.  I personally won’t be buying Citroen again.

Yes the lateer days CRA has benefitted consumers so much, you might even think the changers were manufacture suggestions, we'll give you 30 days to return something for any reason, but after that its more or less, we the manufactureres are innocent unless you can prove them guilty, rather than things should just be replaced/repaired if they do not function as intended for n years (which for high values items should be for several years), fair wear and tear excepted.
Oh and the replacement/repairs should be warranted as is new... Thats what I'd call Consumer Rights (rather than what we now seem to have; 'Manufacturer Rights', and what ever happend to Seller responsibilities, let alone things like from Amazon, doubly let alone from Market place (who took your money..)).
