The clock was bought from thehomehut.com.

which appears to have the exact same images but is listed as slate effect, not sure what they mean by "effect" but you'd expect slate to be more grey than green
Slate effect refers to the finish texture of the paint and the colorisation pattern (e.g. the paler colouring on raised surfices and edges).  It doesn't refer to the colour itself.

    Hello OP

    Was it this clock:

    https://thehomehut.com/products/outdoor-indoor-garden-wall-clock-hand-painted-cog-wheel-clock-29cm

I guess it could be greeny, bluey, greyish in colour

    They have this clock also:

    https://thehomehut.com/products/outdoor-indoor-garden-wall-clock-hand-painted-church-30cm-slate-effect-1087

which appears to have the exact same images but is listed as slate effect, not sure what they mean by "effect" but you'd expect slate to be more grey than green (unless stated as you can get green slate but it's not the common colour you'd associate with slate), unless  that is the correct images for slate and they've used the wrong one for green, who knows?

Their terms are poorly presented, looks like they have some basic concept (like reducing the refund for excessive handling rather than refusing the return) but no refunds on sale items isn't correct and unwrapped items being "consumed" is odd. They haven't really laid out the difference between change of mind and "faulty/not as described" that well.

Overall they could do a lot better.

Any chance of a photo of the actual clock OP?

As an aside, doesn't appear to be a cookie banner on that site, any one else?
Hi. Sorry I've been a bit slow at getting back on here.
Yes it is the clock in the first link, like you say the other looks exactly the same but with a higher price. Beats me. Glad I found it at the lower price!

Below is what I have received:

Clearly very different in colour. Design is very similar but look closely and it is actually different such as 'screw' placements ie by the 5. Also that 5 is very different. The teeth of the cogs are less defined too - not a major issue but quality is lower. Main point being that it is not the same as the one in their photo on which I based my decision to buy the item.

    Below is their image:

No I don't think it is!

There's a few of these on eBay, this listing is labelled green:

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/276467651453?var=579030119114

this one doesn't have a colour:

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/324685797723

and looks a bit green but also a bit bluey/greyish

    Your photo looks extremely green.

Regarding the 5 it looks like the tip is either broken off or wasn't manufactured correctly.

Bit late now but that seller is on eBay (if you do a Google image search of a stock photo you can easily find other places selling the same thing) and had you purchased on eBay you'd be covered for either SNAD* or change of mind.

*Their eBay listing has the colour as green (no mention in revisions of the item specifics being updated at any point) so you might have known beforehand and not purchased/known what to expect.

I'd tell them the 5 is chipped and see what they say.

They have two clocks, the same size, both with identical images at two prices, the only difference is the more expensive one is listed as "slate effect", so I have no idea what it means as the product pages give you no idea, since OP complained they've updated the cheaper clock to say colour green but no amendment on the "slate effect" clock page.

I don't think it's possible to know what they mean, or indeed whether they just have 2 pages for the same product with different prices and different descriptions.

If I had money to burn I'd buy both and find out but alas :)

If I received that clock I wouldn't be returning because the colour, I 'd be returning due the terrible finish.
as I side note I don't like the hands on the one received the bulb on the bottom is far too big.

The picture they've used (for both) is what would be considered "slate effect" painting.  It's a well established description of a specific painting effect.  It's quite time-consuming, so having it as a more expensive option makes sense.

The clock the OP has received isn't slate effect, it's just got some badly done faux distressing.

Looks like they've, intentionally or not, used the wrong picture for the cheaper clock - it should have been a picture of *a* clock with the cheaper paint job.

Check the bottom of the 5 carefully.   From the picture it looks like the part that should curve upwards has snapped off.   Which would make this a faulty product, and would mean you don't have to argue with them about misleading descriptions.

The other minor differences - those look like moulding defects.  They're very common with items made from moulds (like this obviously is), and they should have been removed before painting.  Seems like they put more effort into the model they were going to use for their photo.   Shoddy workmanship.
  • Certainly not a high quality product.
If the 5 is damaged it was done before painting.
Didn't really look too closely at the hands but yes they are quite different too and not for the better...

They've emailed me for their feedback. I wish them all the best.

Painting over a broken bit doesn't make it not broken.  It's pretty clear the upward curved bit *should* be there - look a the three.  It's snapped off, and they've painted over the break.

Indeed and the fact it's been painted over means they can't blame OP for damaging it.

I think with that damaged five - that's more than enough to warrant a return - and for them to pay for it.
