Nationwide App Changes allow them to monitor your device and apps

I was trying to do an online transaction and when it was time to confirm the transaction in my Nationwide app i was forced to uninstall and download a new version. The new version wouldn't open until I agreed to let them monitor the apps on my device to assess my financial crime risk. I don't want them to monitor my device so now I can't use the app at all.

I'm running v52.2.0 of the Nationwide app - it hasn't asked me to install a new version nor to allow it to access other apps.  Are you sure it's not a fake app?  It seems such a retrograde step for Nationwide to take.

With banks more-and-more being held accountable to refund the victims of scams, they are having to build more-and-more protection into their apps.

I suspect this authorisation request is to allow them to check whether the customer have one of the screen/device sharing or remote access apps (such as AnyDesk) installed or active - these are the apps scammers often get victims to install.

They might also do checks such as monitor the "normal" pressure the customers uses when using the banking app, and if that changes substantially, challenge the customer for additional authentication before allowing any funds transfers.

Version 54.1.0 on Android has not asked for any extra permissions.
  • The bank needs to get your permission before it can check your phone location and that your banking app is being logging in from the UK rather than a known hacking factory in the middle of Myanmar.

It might also want to check for installed apps that are capturing your passwords etc.

Try not to be cynical. If a bank tried to access and store things it didn't need the the data protection office would jump all over them with big fines and the people who managed the app would get sacked and never get work again

it appears the app was updated on the 19th Aug, and under privacy it states it does indeed monitor apps on your device. I have it installed on an iPhone and didn’t notice anything different

I had to call Barclays once to get my online account unlocked. I was told, as an aside, that I had a remote access program on my pc. The only one I could find was a Microsoft product.

OH was trying to make a small bank transfer yesterday using the Nationwide app on his mobile. He says it asked him to provide lots of additional information such as the source of income for each of his savings accounts, so that he eventually gave up, and messaged me (at home) to ask me to do the transaction. He rang them and complained this morning.

So something is being rolled out.

Sounds like KYC checks. Perhaps he'd never done them or they'd decided his previous ones needed refreshing. Doesn't sound like anything new.

Can phone screens actually detect the level of pressure the operator is applying when using the screen functions?
I always thought that was a binary - touch / no touch - metric
