Yes I spoke to a friend and when they lost theirs it was cancelled the same day 

Be a lot of office staff away on holiday at the moment as it's the school holidays.

Have you actually applied for your new passport (paid for it etc -  not just reported it lost) ?  if not do so now and put in the notes that your passport has been lost and give the details of where when and how it got lost.  Your application will be picked up straight away as they are not waiting for documents. The case worker should be able to process you lost passport without contacting you if you have given all the details. You don’t have to wait for any reference number as your lost report will automatically link to your application.
