Thank you, that does help. I will look at Barclaycard. I get a local SIM card so local data isn't an issue. T-Mobile USA have a prepaid esim app which is perfect for me as I need local phone calls, data and texts.Santander My current card will only allow SMS verification if you use online banking or the app. If you cannot use either, they do give you option of email, but that's only in very rare cases and you will not be able to use online banking or the app. I have tried switching to the USA number but they only accept UK phone numbers. They will also randomly ask you to verify via text message one-time password when signing into the app or the mobile website.I struggle to receive texts from the UK. I should be able to receive them. Roaming is off and I'm on a local network, wifi is also off but they don't come through or there is a significant delay which can be hours. The last one took 3 and 1/2 hours to come through. By the time it did the store was closed I wasn't able to make the purchase.I've also had my card Frozen when trying to make a payment using the card chip and pin. I do make sure the abroad Warning is on but it doesn't make any difference. They've blocked Target, Uber, Ticketmaster and any transaction I try and do through MGM resorts. They block due to fraud and I have to reply to their texts for them to deny the transaction and clear it so I can try again. When you want to pay for your your hotel on your credit card to get cash back. It is a real nightmare when they freeze your credit card and the only option they give you is call them I have spent a fortune on international phone calls to them trying to get this sorted. I just want to credit card where I don't have this mess. The only way I found around this is Google pay requires authentication to add a card but since it works offline they will not ask for verification when making payments. It does have to connect online to refresh the tokens it uses but it still won't ask for verification to make payments.0

if you use the app to authenticate then you will need internet access and this can get very expensive in certain countries0 -

When I go abroad, my current provider will only allow me to use SMS. Unfortunately this is no good for me as I cannot receive a signal when abroad.0 -

For in-person transactions you don't need SMSs, there's already 2 factors if required, the physical card, and the PIN.0 -

I really don't know why I Santander Force multifactor authentication for any purchase through MGM resorts. I had to wait for an SMS to come through while buying a chocolate milkshake from the shop in the hotel lobby.
All I can think of is had a number of customers have had issues with MGM results so they force this. This also happened before MGM got hacked so it can't be just because of that. You are really lucky not having multifactor you, while you're abroad. I really wish I had that. It would have saved me a lot of time and money.0 -

I use my Halifax Clarity card abroad all the time and with in person purchases I have never had to do any secondary authentication other than the PIN code.
Not in person purchases on the web work in the same way as at home where some need authenticating in the app.
This is also the same for all my other credit and debit cards.
Oh, and that included MGM in Las Vegas.
I have though had my card locked whilst abroad and had to call them to get it unlocked, but that was not due to any missed authentications.0 -

I've never had an issue like this in the UK. It's only one abroad. I used to have Halifax credit card and they did something similar and would only authenticate through text message. If I could do this through an app it'd be perfect but they don't. And even when they do, they will randomly log you out of the app forcing you to wait for an SMS code to log in. Even if you've got biometrics set, they were still force SMS on you.
I check in to MGM resorts the same way I checked into the Hilton in the airport. Nothing was different between either transaction I could see. They blocked MGM but didn't block the Hilton. I must have a really bad luck with the bank. I tried once going through their online chats to get my card unfrozen and they wouldn't help. I had to call them. One day they'll join the modern world where you can get this stuff started from online chat or apps. Until then, I might try getting a Barclay card who appear to offer it through an app but they do advice. They still can send SMS if they choose. Or open a monzo account and put enough funds in there to cover it but that would be a debit card which I would prefer not to0 -
