Kitchen ceiling

Does anyone know how I can fix this damage on the kitchen ceiling?

Do I need to re do the whole ceiling?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It’s water damage from an old leak

Paint over it with white gloss then emulsion after filling in the missing bits

I did mine with polyfilla.  You have to do a bit & let it dry then do a bit more etc etc etc.

Yes the leak has been fixed.

I will give that all a try. Thank you
  • Whatever you do, please do not disturb even a small part of it.  Old artex contains asbestos.  Suggest you use a sealant before painting it,

I would use something like https://www.zinsseruk.com/product/cover-stain/ once you have filled the hole to seal the staining and then paint over it.

    Old Artex may contain asbestos.
Asbestos free Artex (the brand) was available from around 1976, and the company stopped using asbestos in 1984. Other manufacturers of textured coatings followed suit, and the stuff was finally banned in 1999. The only way to know if the coating does contain asbestos is to get samples tested (taken from several spots).
Even if the artex does contain asbestos, it is not the huge health risk that some people make it out to be. Sensible precautions taken when doing repairs or cutting & drilling such as wearing appropriate PPE and cleaning up afterwards will minimise any exposure.

These loose bits will either need trimming away, or else gently gluing back in place.
You may be able to brush slightly-diluted PVA in there, getting it as far under as possible, and then gently press the loose bits back into contact with the p'board.
If it works but springs back off, you may need to use a prop to hold it until the PVA dries. Try and wipe away any excess PVA that's extruded when you do this, then you can use anything softish - a folded up cloth inside a poly bag - propped against it to hold it in place until dry. (The poly will not adhere to the PVA)
Once dry, give it a good wipe over with a damp cloth, see if any remaining PVA comes off the surface before you fill or paint.
If that works, you should hopefully have a lot less filling-matching to do.

When you put the final coat of paint on, make sure it is matt paint as it hides imperfections better.
