ip address help

Hi folks,

If I send my company an email from a new gmx email address with fake name to stay anonymous, so as I can pass on info about a worker who has been up to things he shouldn't, will they be able to see my personal ip address on the header info or will it be addresses from gmx mail.

I did a few test emails and all I could find in the header was different ip addresses from Germany etc... so hopefully will be safe from detection as its nothing that will need any police/law involvement.

While what you do is ultimately up to you in this matter, what I am going to say that you may blow your own cover regardless of whether your IP address shows Germany, Australia or The Moon.

I'd suggest being careful what you write.  If you were to report (to take a less serious example) "Fred ate all the biscuits in the staff room" for example, how would being Mr Anonymous of Joe Public help you there?  How would a member of the public know Fred ate all the biscuits and that he ate them all in the staff room?  The staff room is just that - for staff.  This example would automatically go to show (on the date in question) that you raised it if you were working with Fred.

I think a better solution might be to go through the company. Have you not considered raising this matter internally first?  If you raise it as a grievance you should have right of confidentiality

In the test emails I couldn't find an ip that located to me, only ones I seen located to Germany and a few other countries that I'm guessing are the email providers.

You can always send an email from your mobile phone using mobile data from city center.. or even work - it will be some random IP address.

I miss cutting letters out of magazines (never newspapers - nasty cheap paper) and sticking them to sheets of foolscap with Copydex.

Took ages so it let the angst fester and grow just that little bit longer,

The letterbox had to be at least a bus ride away too.

Are there still internet cafes? They were always my venue of choice for a bit of anonymous mailing.

Whether or not it's in the headers of the received email, the email provider will know, and will have logged the IP address, and can be ordered by a court to divulge it and any other relevant information they hold.  If you don't believe me, put "Norwich Pharmacal order" into your search engine of choice

I'd expect the company to be more interested in setting the police on finding the anonymous sender who potentially defamed the subject of the malicious email and to treat it as some kind of muck-raking vendetta rather than giving any credence to it.

If I have already sent the email from my phone is there anything I can do to cover my tracks?

If you've already sent it and you think TOR or VPN or something is going to help you... then you are mistaken, as are many people who use Tor/VPN for inappropriate uses, think they're safe, and still get their doors bashed down by the police.

If you have sent an email, I think you may have made your bed and you have to lie in it, so to speak.
There is no such thing as total anonymity on the internet.  You can VPN through VPN through VPN until the cows come home, but it doesn't make you 100% invisible.
