There are also good charity shops on Nicolson St/Clerk St which is close by the University and down in Stockbridge (which is almost like a village in the city)

If you're looking for info on places to eat try the List on-line guide (this also covers Glasgow)

The Galleries (Portrait, National Gallery, Modern Art, Dean) are good for a visit if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. The cafes there are also reasonable for lunch and tea/coffe

Harvey Nicks is worth a wander, if only to see how the other half live! It's got a cafe on the 4th floor, but it's £3 for a scone or pastry and £2 for a coffee - and then they'll charge you a 10% service charge....

The Edinburgh Pass may be worth getting for a day or two - it costs over £10 per adult to get into the Castle, so you'd probably get your money back pretty quickly, but it all depends what you're into

Enjoy your break to the city!
  • Two good, reliable online guides to Edinburgh restaurants:

Would recommend Dusit Thai on Thistle Street and Fishers in the City (seafood) across the road from Dusit. Urban Angel on Hanover Street is great for lunch, David Banns in the Old Town is probably Edinburgh's best vegetarian restaurant and Nile Valley near the University serves good Sudanese food in basic surroundings. The Fruitmarket gallery (next to Waverley station) does very good lunches as well as cakes and excellent coffee. Dean Gallery has a decent caff where you can sit outside with your oatcakes, cheese and wine, the National Portrait Gallery Cafe on Queen Street is good too - especially for tea and scones! :)

Good places for liquid refreshment are Guildford Arms (behind Burger King on East [Waverley station/Balmoral Hotel] end of Princes Street and Hendersons Wine Bar on Hanover Street.

and the best tour to do is the Witchery Tour, your kids will love it :)

If you have any Tesco vouchers you can use them for Britannia also on Pigsback you can get a £10 off voucher for so many piggy points. I have just applied for one as I haven't been on Britannia as yet.

  • The pass doesn't actually cover Edinburgh Castle so take care before buying that it covers the attractions you want to go to.
