This website is for the assosiation of Scottish visitor attractions:
    www.asva.co.uk

They have all the major attractions and lots and lots of smaller activities. They also have a calander so you can see what is on at anyone time. You can limit searches to just Edinburgh.

Its difficult to recomend any one hotel or youth hostel as everyone has diffrent needs. Most tourist activities are around the castle and holyrood parlament. Most pubs are around the grass market and also Rose Street. The grass market a bit more studenty and rose street more 30+ market

Buses are cheap and fairly frequent. You can see routes of the main bus company at www.lothianbuses.com. They opperate about 95% of the services.

Can anyone help with something to do on New Years Day and the 2nd Jan please? We're spending another Hogmanay in Edinburgh but this year found EVERYTHING closed and nothing to do on New Years Day.

I'd like to see a show or something but not really into Hairspray at the Playhouse - any other venues?

    C xx

    Hi Skint_Catt,

Remember the attractions in the gardens such as the ice rink under the castle and the German market are open all throughout the festive season.

I live in Edinburgh so if i think of anything else I'll let you know.. :)

Thanks zoold. We saw the German market this year, must remember that but I'll never get my OH on an ice rink unfortunately :( I love Edinburgh so much I can't wait for this Hogmanay!
  • My Partner and I are coming to Edinburgh for my birthday and we are wanting to do the attractions but on a tight budget what do people recommend to do??? Are the edinburgh passes worth the money???

See reply to edinburgh zoo link.

I looked at the Edinburgh pass and decided that it wasn't good value as we felt it would be a case of just cramming everything in. But I'm sure for some people that is fine.

Couple of freebies, National Gallery & Holyrood (parliament) probably more.

Got a cheap deal for Edinburgh on 16th - 19th november. Never been before so will obviously visit the castle.

Probably go to a Mary kings close tour. But i also have a bunch of reward tokens we exchanged and never used them all (when some family visited).

Has anyone been to the scotch whisky experience, or been on auld reekie tours?

And do they impose any restrictions you are aware of on tesco reward users? such as only silver tour at the whisky experience (i would expect this really but would be nice if not).

Not a big shopper but would like to look around some shops that you dont see anywhere else, is there a good unique shopping area here?

    Thanks
