Video of car being MOT'd

  • I’ve just moved and went to Stoneacre Peugeot to arrange my mot yesterday.
O my god what a joke.
First wait 15 mins to speak to a sales rep, I said I just want a mot, no service is already paid for via service contract.
Ok, mot will take 2.5 hours, that’s mot and visual inspection and video all over the car, ( we have to do this by law was her comment ).
I got up and walked out, as I left I said that has just cost you over a grand as I was going to get a service contract with you for the next 5 years, rang the next Peugeot dealer, 20 miles away, they booked me in and said I can wait as takes 45 mins to 1 hour.

That's very interesting that they have to video it by law.  I think if they continue to ignore my request for a copy I'll contact the information commissioner because it's definitely dodgy imho.

Are you sure they are videoing the MOT?

DVSA require all MOT stations to provide viewing areas.
There are obviously some health and safety requirements, along with some others, like being able to see the whole test from the viewing area.

Some MOT stations find it hard to compile, so they are allowed to display the test, live on a fixed monitor in a waiting room.

It must not be recorded though, only live video allowed.

I suspect they are recording the car's service.
    Mine do this.
Originally it was photos, now the technician runs through a quick briefing of my vehicle pointing out all the major areas like brake wear, tyre wear and so on.
Every year they send a copy via text message

You could go back and say you forgot to charge me for the MOT. What was the advisory
I already told them they haven't charged me and they're not interested.

The time to ask for the video is before authorising the repair. It may have been someone different from usual who didn’t know how things are usually done, or if other posters are correct as to the viewing of MOTs, how they are meant to be done.

At least they did ask - a local garage was asked to MOT only and changed the brake pads without asking saying they were required. Funnily enough, when asked to produce the originals, they wouldn’t do this.

If they did ask for payment for the MOT then as you have said the video is free, you wouldn’t have a leg to stand on to not pay without evidence that the fault didn’t exist. I think you’ll have to take it as a lesson; if pushed they might then bill for the MOT. Obviously warn anyone that you can to not use/be careful with this branch.

Have you checked online that they have correctly recorded the MOT as passed?

I can’t find anywhere that says it’s a legal requirement to video an MOT test so suspect that it isn’t

Hydraulic fluid leak from the clutch master cylinder and said I could lose control of the clutch if it worsened.  They removed and replaced pipes and a part which they said they would return to me but didn't and when asked for these parts are ignoring me.

Depending on the setup you could have lost your brakes never mind your clutch if it worsened.  Then you would have been complaining!

There is no legal requirement to video record an MOT test that I am aware of.

What can typically happen is that they do a 60 second video that is a walk through back to front that talks through the state of tyres, brakes, suspension and exhaust. That is not a video of the MOT (it can also be done with a service only).

There is not requirement for them to do this, it is only if they list it as a component of the service / MOT before hand that you have any right to request it.

I doubt they video'd a clutch master system hydraulic leak as part of that walk through. But should be fairly obvious if any pipes have been replaced.

They told me it was video d and said they'd send me a copy and also return original parts which they did not do.  They also haven't charged for MOT.  If it was so serious shouldn't it have failed?  I was told how dangerous it could be and that's why I had the work done.

It wasn't "dangerous" and might never have become dangerous.  How lucky do you feel?

Personally, I wouldn't want to be driving around in a car with brakes which "might" not work at some point in the future if the alternative was some preventative maintenance.
