The facts:
Bought "SUV" from dealer in June 2024. Very happy with car, it's about 10 years old.
Part cash, part PX, part finance, total around £8000
July, engine light comes on
Advise dealer of this by phone.
They say, keep us in the loop.
Diagnostic check shows advisory that glow plugs might need changing in the future.
August, we get the aircon condenser replaced (we knew this needed doing, it formed part of the deal when buying the car)
The garage doing the aircon check the engine light and codes are P0380 glow plugs and P1489 low pressure EGR temp.
This diagnostic process involved some labour charges which were mixed in with the cost of diagnosing the aircon issues.
Next step - I called the finance company and they went through a list of questions, including "what is your preferred outcome?" the answer I chose is "fix the car" rather than "reject the car" as I do genuinely like it.
They said they will respond in 5 to 10 working days.
I'm thinking the first moral of the story is always part finance a used car no matter how caked up with money you are as the finance company will make sure the dealer does the right thing.
I have no experience in this so if I get shot down in flames so be it

Cars require continual maintenance. As it's 10 years old other parts are likely to progressively reach the end of their economic lives.0

I'm talking about the rights a car buyer has in law0

So the glow plugs need replacing and the aircon recharging? Not surprising on a 10 year old car.

yes the aircon repair was already something that I agreed I would cover as part of the deal. Not an issue.
As far as I know, if you buy a used car pre-existing faults are covered up to 6 months after purchase.
Within reason - if you buy a car for £700 then you can't expect it to be perfect
To be clear, I'm not talking about cars in general, I'm talking about the exact law involving second hand car deals0 -
the finance company own the car untiI finish payments. As part of the agreement I have to keep it in tip top condition. I now await what they are going to say about how to get these faults rectified.

To be clear, I'm not talking about cars in general, I'm talking about the exact law involving second hand car dealsI had my glow plugs changed and it cost £300If that is what it needs, it will only cost the dealer a hundred or so, a small price to pay to keep his good reputation. So long as that solves the problem, faults are not easy to diagnose.0 -

As Lease & PCP are the only type where finance co actually own the car.
I can't see either being used on a 10 year old car.
In the 1st instance you go back to the dealer re the glow plugs.Life in the slow lane0 -

What hasppened between the dignistics and you going to the finance company?
Did you ask the garage to fix the car?0 -
The labour required in the diagnostic process was:-
Plug in the OBD2
Read the OBD2
If you don't know the code, look it up
Report findings to customer
Have a 5 minute chat
Charge the customer £50 diagnostic fee.
