So water meter fitted today great timing after a night shift lol had about 3 hours sleep but guess now we see how it goes.

I do hope we save!!! today being a typical day I was at work until 6am then slept til well 1pm ish kids are school all day and wife at work so nothing is getting used so unless they start turning on taps and leaving then for 2 hrs hopefully see a difference is the bill.

one question I pay direct debit every month on the 15th I think £56 so what happens do I just keep that direct debit in place still? I’ve had no instructions on that side of things with regards to billing
I’d just leave it. They’ll soon adjust it once the readings indicate actual usage (could also go up too!)

I had a water meter installed in December 2023 ,  I have just received 2 letters from the water company ,one informing me of high use of water up to September 2024 and one Statement . It would have helped if the letter warning me of high use had been posted in September instead of January this year but hey ho . Anyway they informed me that in the 12 months covered by the statement I had used 288 cubic meters or 288,000 liters , the cost for this amount is £1,166 ,as I was paying £37 monthly this means I owe £723 . So I phoned the water company after I had checked if the water meter moved when nothing was turned on ,it didn't , so after a long chat with someone on the phone I was told I had to get my plumbing checked for leaks, luckily I am covered  for this by a plumbing insurance policy ,they did not find any leaks . So back on the phone to the water company where I am told all they can do is put me back on rateable value bills and that I will still have to pay the £723 debit . I am a 70 year old pensioner who lives in a 3 bed house with my partner, we only have a shower once a week ,use the washing machine 3 or 4 times a week and probably flush the toilet around 10 to 15 times a day , I am baffled as to why we according to the meter we are using between 800 to a 1000 liters a day .I would strongly advise anyone getting a water meter to check the usage on a daily basis so you could cancel it early before racking up an extortionate bill .

Have they billed you for the correct meter? Is the meter definitely connected to your property? Have you checked the meter readings?

Once installed if you get hourly reads from the smart meter then you can check you don't have a leak as there should be no usage recorded when you're all out of the house or asleep and no-one uses the loo or washing applieances.
There are no smart water meters that do household hourly reads that I'm aware of
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

My TW smart meter provides hourly reads (though the readings take up to 3 days to appear in my account).
