Motorola are one of the poorer supporters of their phones when it comes to frequency and length of time they support their phones. The majority of their phones are in the budget space and have a budget level of support and as such life span.

Google and Samsung now guarantee version and security updates for longer than anyone, including Apple for their latest phones, although this does reduce a little for some of their budget phones.

For example, the Google Pixel 8 or 8a will be getting security updates until 2030.

Just been looking and at the moment the Samsung galaxy A15 seems to be the stand out performer at about £129- in my local Currys shop.
If you buy a phone are there any extra's you have to pay for, I know a case could be one thing but anything else please.
As you might deduce from my comments I'm in my late 70's and quite good at the technology I use but some thing like a new phone after 5+ years since the last one I bought totally out of my depth, any help, comments would be much appreciated.

You could consider the Nokia 3.4 at that sort of price, I did see an article somewhere that did rate it as the best budget smartphone for the elde… er technology challenged. 😀

Though we have just upgraded the MIL (she is 88) to a refurbished iPhone XR which she seems to be getting on with OK

The Nokia 3.4 was released in 2020 with 3 years of security updates, so will not be getting updates and is stuck on Android 12.

The Samsung galaxy A15 will get OS releases up to Android 18 and security updates until 2029 so is a pretty good choice. Other than a case and perhaps some new charging cables (A15 will be USB C and the Moto looks like it may still be Micro USB) and possibly a faster charger but if you are happy with the one you have then that should be fine.

The main difference will be the user interface. Samsung heavily customise the UI in comparison to many. Likely not an issue but may take a few days to get used to.

Agree that the A15 seems to be the best budget handset at the moment. Are you sure about that Currys price? Online check at their site says £179 (same at Argos) - if there's a local deal that's better I'd grab it.

EDIT : My mistake, there are 2 versions of the A15, with or without 5G, without is cheaper.

Ah! I missed that, another £50- for 5G?

Yep, same spec (5G version has teeny bit quicker processor). Unless you need fast downloads (don't think anyone is using Voice over 5G yet) can't think that the extra cost is worth it.

I'd go for a Samsung Galaxy A14 for length of support and many options to optimise for usability.

Otherwise you could look at Nokia G22 or Motorola Moto G13.

Samsung A15 4G have 5 years of security support.

If you willing to get a contract, I would recommend go for pixel 8a which support up to 2031. (make sure you mark down the date which serve 24 months on calendar and switch to SIMO)

I'll be buying what ever phone and as I only pay about £12- per month.

Problem I'm having is as I want Curry's to transfer all from my existing phone data and swap the card over etc I've tried to find out if a branch has the phone I want in stock and some one there who can do the transfer, impossible as far as I can see to find all of this out!
It looks like it's a question of checking a store physically. i.e. my local branch said early this morning that they had no one who could handle android change over until Saturday!
