Hi, I've submitted a self assessment tax return as I needed to pay the child benefit High tax charge. It says I need to ensure the money is received by them by end Dec, but I selected to have the repayment taken from my tax next year. Anyone had the same? Were you able to have it taken off tax code or did you have to pay outright?can't afford 2k, it will have to go on a credit card

Which tax year are you referring to?kezzygirl said:Hi, I've submitted a self assessment tax return as I needed to pay the child benefit High tax charge. Tax payable at the end of December 2024 would only ever be an old tax year (not 2023-24) and in that situation paying it via your tax code isn't possible, you have to pay it direct.
You may be able to make a payment plan to spread it out but you would be charged late payment interest for the privilege. And also a penalty if you don't get the plan in place before the tax is due to be paid.
But first things first, what tax return is it you have submitted??1 -

Are you sure it is not the tax return that has to be received by 31 December in order for the charge to be included in your tax code?kezzygirl said:Hi, I've submitted a self assessment tax return as I needed to pay the child benefit High tax charge. If it's not possible to have it collected via next years tax code then worth pointing out that HMRC do not accept payment from a personal credit card.0

Return for 23/24 isn't due until January 2025 if completed online.

But must be filed by no later than 30 December 2024 if someone wants tax owing from the 2023-24 return to be included in their 2025-26 tax code.daveyjp said:Return for 23/24 isn't due until January 2025 if completed online.

Update: I called hmrc and they confirmed the amount will be taken from my 25/26 tax code. He said I've filed it correctly, seems a lot of money to pay back!0
