Have a look at the customer satisfaction surveys. You will fine that both TalkTalk and Vodafone are cheap for a reason. They are in the bottom half of number of complaints per user base.

Zen Internet have had a good reputation for years though.

If you take a contract on an Openreach provider then you will be able to upgrade to FTTP when OpenReach connect you to fibre. Whether you will be able to switch penalty free to a City Fibre solution with one of them is not something I am aware of.

You will need to check with them.

Maybe move to a monthly provider like Cuckoo where you will be able to swap ISP or at least backbone provider.

It’s not clear what you are asking , change from BT to Zen, TT or VF on Openreach FTTC and then ‘migrate’ to City Fibre FTTP using the same ISP , if that’s the case you need to check first , your ISP ( whoever you pick ) may still be obligated to Openreach for a minimum term , so even if those ISP offer service on both Openreach and CF , they may not switch you from one to the other for ‘free’ .
It’s possible that CF incentivise ISP to move onto them , so it may be cost free to you ( the incentive CF give the ISP compensating any termination fee the same ISP has from OR ) but you need to check .
If it’s not cost free , if you have such a small amount of time to go until ‘out of contract’ , simply roll onto a 30 day notice contract with BT and then once CF is available , serve notice to BT and join whoever you want on CF

I currently have FTC with bt using openreach!

I wanna join city Fibre FTP ASAP once it goes live but sadly that could be another year they done the cables to streets (last year) but not connected the flats yet due to landlord permission!

Going into rolling contact is ok but too expensive!

Those the only providers that use city fibre!

Vodafone said as long as the price is higher you can upgrade!

So are those providers not great? If so what city fibre provider do you recommend?

Zen Internet are a good provider. The other two if it all goes well are fine, its when they don't that you have issues and it can be painful.

If it is likely to be a year away for City Fibre, then a 12 month contract may be the best balance.

As 400ixl mentioned, a 12 month contract might be the best balance in terms of price, flexibility and checking Full Fibre options at that point if Openreach (or other wholesalers) offer FTTP.

A website called ISPreview has rankings based on Customer service and user reviews (and news) which might be helpful.

Zen has a decent reputation. Another alternative is Aquiss Broadband which is a family run firm that's been around for nearly 20 years now. That's in the top 6 in Customer service on that list above. BT, Vodafone, TalkTalk etc are not. Aquiss and Zen both offer services on Openreach and CityFibre.

I believe the Aquiss price works out to an average price per month (it's 6 months half price) that will probably be in line with Vodafone's offer price, except you have a 12 months contract and the price is fixed (it does not go up afterward) and you have the benefit of excellent customer service. From what I understand the Zen price for CityFibre is cheaper than the Openreach equivalent also.

You are getting way ahead of yourself if CF isn’t even available yet , the OP asked what was the best option to go with , given their BT contract was up for renewal  ,  considering niche providers on CF when CF  isn’t even available yet seems somewhat pointless,
presumably the more pressing decision is stay with BT either with a new minimum term or rolling 30 day contract, or another ISP on Openreach ( that uses CF as well as OR ) and hope that they will change you to City Fibre when CF becomes available without charging you anything to do that .
FWIW , there are plenty of posts on this and similar forums that are along the lines of , ‘I was told CF was going to be available soon  and yet years later , still no CF ‘ , personally I wouldn’t base a decision based on an assumption that CF ‘may’ available in 12 months
