Bullied by Scottish Power

Pre-covid I had both gas and electric meters replaced and smart meters installed.   The electric one was never commissioned properly and didn't ever record a useage reading.  I couldn't provide meter readings for gas only as account was dual fuel.   Due to covid, I couldn't get an engineer out although when he did eventually come out, he replaced both meters and confirmed that they didn't record useage so nobody would be able to accurately calculate my bill.

Scottish Power have continued to bully me into paying a balance that they can't explain or justify and have now updated my credit file as showing 'missed payments'.   I increased my payments as a gesture of good will while this dispute was ongoing and have never missed a payment, so their statement is factually untrue.   I'm not in a position where I have no choice but to accept the balance or be taken to court.   I have stated that I will agree a payment plan, under duress, if they correct my credit file but I am not hopeful.

Can anyone advise on how I can satisfactorily resolve this issue please.   I would love to be able to afford legal assistance, but this is simply too expensive.

  • What usage have they estimated across the time when the old meter was in use and how does this compare to the usage recorded on the new (working) meter?

How much have they charged you for that period and how much do you think they should have charged you (and why do you think that)?

The complaints and Ombudsman process need factual evidence of things like this to be able to help you.

Have you made a formal complaint to Scottish Power yet?  If not, it's about time you did.
If you have made a formal complaint, then you can go to the Energy ombudsman (a) after 8 weeks, or (b) as soon as they send you a "deadlock" letter saying they can't resolve the complaint.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Do you give them readings monthly? If so raise a complaint.
