Leak after water meter installed

Hi, has anyone experienced sudden leaking pipes after having new water meter fitted? We've lived here for over 17 years and never had any issues with leaking pipes and 3 months after our smart meter was installed under kitchen sink, we have a leak under the concrete floor just inches away from the meter. We suspected it might have something to do with the meter as it's quite a coincidence and the plumber who located the leak is certain that the meter installation is the cause due to the pipework being disturbed during the installation. We have reported this to Thames but they are taking no responsibility and insist it's down to us to have the leak repaired. We feel they are just fobbing us off.

Is the leaking pipe an old lead pipe or newer MDPE (plastic) pipe and is it embedded in the concrete floor?
  • You would need a lot more than co-incidental timing to show that it was negligent works by Thames causing the leaks.

Old lead pipe and yeah think it is embedded in the floor.
  • So if its a lead pipe then it will have been there for many years and it will eventually start leaking - whether this happened sooner because of being disturbed during the meter installation will be impossible to know or prove so as the pipe is on your property it will be your responsibility to fix or replace.  Now might be a good time to consider replacing it with a new MDPE supply pipe - TW will replace the pipe on their side of the boundary once you have installed the new pipe on your property.
