There is no such thing.
It's the Motor Insurers Database.
Did this 'friendly poke' suggest that you need to pay anything to anyone?
Its unusual its the police sending the letter though, normally the DVLA send the letters automatically.bertiewill said:My problem is for 3 month I wasn't on it and has their been an incident this would have caused stress at the least and potentially hampered any claim. I am also not happy at receiving a letter from the police where I have done absolutely nothing wrong.
My insurance company have been remiss and I feel I am owed some recompense here. What is my best way of going about this?
You can only claim for what did happen not what might of happened. You've only just found out and weren't stressing for 3 months about it. So, what financial loss have you suffered? Assuming its nothing and your "stress" was at most for a couple of hours before you could call LV for an explanation then complain if you want to and they may give you a £25 go away money to close the matter off.0 -

Interesting that the MID was down, I thought that may be BS.3 -

However for a case like this where the stress and inconvenience was minor, it is likely to be a few tens of pounds at most.0 -

I still think it would be interesting to know what would have happened had I made a claim, especially a more complex one, larger amount/overseas incident etc. I guess that is a counterfactual which is hard to prove/examine further.

Indeed, there's no dispute that you had a policy, as evidenced by the fact that the insurer updated the MID as soon as you drew their attention to the error. An error on the database would not have affected any claim.
If you want to worry about "what if" scenarios, a better one would be being stopped by the police at some late hour because your car wasn't showing on the MID, nobody answering the phone at the insurer's office, and the police not believing that you were insured and seizing the car. You would have got that one sorted out eventually, but probably at significant expense and inconvenience, and that would have left you entitled to significant compensation from the insurer.
However compensation is supposed to reflect what actually happened as a result of the insurer's error, not what might have happened but didn't. And what actually happened was that you were a bit peturbed by a letter from the police, and had to waste a bit of time calling the insurer to get it sorted out.2
