Delay flights rights

I needed to fly to Ireland for a private doctor appointment.  Take off is at 10 land at 11 which leaves 3 hours to get my appointment which is only 20 mins away pent of time.

However my flight yesterday was delayed 2 hours 50 mins and only took off at 1309 landed about 1425.

This also made my return flight the same day useless too.

We waited a long as we could but when it came apparent we had no chance of making that appointment we left. We even called the clinic and rearranged as late as possible but we still could not make it.

Are we entitled to any compensation? Technically it was delays 2 hours 55 mins.

No, you're only entitled to compensation for delays (arriving over three hours late) if you actually travel on the flight - you might have been able to negotiate something with onsite airline staff at the time but don't believe you'd have any actual rights after the event if you effectively chose not to travel.

There was no point to fly out and then simply leave arrivals to then walk into departures for my flight  Especially being disabled.

Sure, I'm not criticising your decision or saying that I'd have done anything differently, but just highlighting that it was your call, and so the scenario you describe doesn't result in the airline having any liabilities to you under the regulations.

How is the 2:50 derived ?  As the time differential is 3:25.

Boarding was 2h50m to 3h late. (Different sites report slightly differen times)

From info online, they actually made up time flying there but took 40 mins to taxi to a gate.

Sorry,  didn't take it as criticism. Just giving a little background why I didn't stay.

Ryanair we're probably happy we left,  I overheard the staff say the flight was overbooked.

Although irrelevant in this scenario where you weren't on the flight, for future reference it's the time that the first door is opened on arrival that's measured against the scheduled time of arrival, so it sounds like the delay here would have been over three hours.  Again for future reference, the reason for the delay is also important, in that compensation isn't payable if it's caused by extraordinary circumstances beyond the airline's control.

If true and you'd volunteered to be removed then chances are you could have secured at least a refund and potentially an extra payment too.

Gates aren't always available when planes land late.  Nothing the airline can do about that. Totally at the behest of the airport.
