Stick with openreach FTTP or cityfibre?

I’ve been with Sky FTTP for a few years but this year can’t give me a good retention offer

Vodafone FTTP are working out cheap for me, especially with added cashback . As I understand it Voda use CityFibre which I have in my area.

If I move to Voda , will city fibre install a second box on my outside wall next to the OpenReach one ?

How does moving providers work? Do I have to manually give notice to Sky as this is not a line take over ?

is it worth the hassle or should I stick to looking for deals on Openreach ?

    Hi,

I've been with CityFibre since 2018.  I personally think they are great and are very reliable.

When they installed to my house, they did dig up the garden and installed a new wire/box.  However, my Uncle had it installed a few months back and they used the existing openreach pole and a brand new wire (and box attached to the outside of the house).

If it was me, I would move across to CityFibre if only for the fact that the upload speed is the same as the download speed unlike the OpenReach offerings.

My uncle went with Vodafone and has got 150Mbps up and down.   They keep writing to him offering an upgrade to 24 month contract for 900Mbps for £27 which is a great price.   He doesn't need it so hasn't upgraded.    He is also pleased with the VOIP telephone service which works great (however, it did take them two days to transfer his 50 year old phone number to the new service so he couldn't get any calls for those two days.

    Hope this helps.

If you move to Voda over Cityfibre, then yes you will have a second line installed, not necessarily next to the existing. As already mentioned, Cityfibre is symmetric, that's important to some people but for most, probably not

If Vodafone have a choice of Openreach or CF in an area , they prefer to use CF , so you will get a second ‘line’ , a second CSP and second ONT ( alongside the Openreach ones not necessarily placed immediately next to them , you can to a certain extent chose the location , CF  shouldn’t touch the existing Openreach items ) .

As there is no ‘connection’ between the two networks you would treat the cessation of the Sky service and the provision of the CF based VF services separately, that does offer the option to get CF in and working before cancelling the Sky service, so you are not without service should the CF service not be provided on time or is faulty when provided and takes time to get working , but obviously that means paying for both for a period of time .

As far as is it worth it , that’s really subjective only you can decide that , some will ‘love’ that CF has a higher upload potential speed , great if you have a YouTube channel and upload content 24/7 , but for most it’s hardly an essential option.

I've been with CityFibre with Fibrehop and Brillband for 18 months and have been quite happy. They are cheaper and are symettric so I wouldn't go back to an Openreach isp unless they offered a better price.

They'll install their own outside wallbox and internal ont, as well as running their own fibre to your house, either by burying it in ypur garden, putting it through an existing duct or hanging it from a telegraph pole.

My install wasn't any hassle. They did all the external stuff without any need for me to be there and made an appointment to do the internal bit.

Thanks for all the comments everyone. I’m looking at getting the 150mb package but Vodafone ‘guarantee’ 75mbs download speed only. This seems a bit low compared to the speed you’re paying for? I get close to 150mbs most times on Sky at the moment

I’m not a gamer but work from home and most times there will be two TVs streaming .

Are you sure that's for FTTP? With FTTP the network is designed so that all properties csn get 1gbps, and if you have a lower soeed package they throttle it.

Not all properties can get a guaranteed 1Gbps throughput, FTTP is a contended service, multiple customers are sharing a single 2.4Gbps link.
