My wife and daughter are travelling to Munich next week (Adele!) and due to recent family bereavements I haven't planned ahead for spending (usually I make sure there is a good card available for overseas spending).

So, I need advice from experts! What is our best strategy to quickly find a good spending solution? I have a Tesco, Virgin Money, Barclaycard Rewards, MBNA and M&S credit card, but none with 0% purchases or any deals any more. We have a Santander 123 current account.

Thanks in advance!

How much money are they actually going to spend on this short trip? There will be fees with their normal card usage but it shouldn't add up to much.
  • Is your Barclaycard Rewards not fee free abroad ?

How much are they likely to spend?

    Take small amount of cash.

Can you get a pre paid visa / master card?

Open a Chase current account? They have fee free overseas spending on debit card with 1% cashback. You get the debit card details in the app and can add the card to Google wallet or apple equivalent so you can use it immediately.

What OP has is irrelevant if they aren't going, which is how I read it.

For a quick and easy solution Starling or Chase account with Forex fee free debit cards.  Both can be opened online and approval is quick if your wife and daughter have other bank accounts in their name.
  • If they are flying with Lufthansa I'd suggest that you prepare for the return flight to be cancelled at short notice and be prepared to pay up-front for a hotel, food and transport for an extra night - based on my recent experience.

Thanks everyone! Quite right, I'd overlooked that Barclaycard Reward card is fee free overseas. Also, Chase current account looks like a good option.

All of these cards will need to be in your wife / daughters names of course. Does one of them have a companion card on the Barclaycard reward.

They can of course open their own Chase accounts and get the virtual card immediately and hopefully the physical card before travelling.

Both can be additional cardholders on the credit card, assuming the girl is 18 and resides at the principal cardholder's home address.
