I seem to remember reading that German kitchen cabinets use stronger cross beams for structural rigidity, and a thin back panels (which can be removed if wanted) while British cabinets used thick, 18mm back panels to provide rigidity
The old MFI units I ripped out here had 3mm hardboard back panels. Their replacements (Cooke & Lewis from B&Q) were a bit more substantial at 5mm thick. IKEA don't even bother with back panels in their base units.
Can't comment about other brands, but there isn't any real need to use anything thicker than 6mm.
