Surely the evidence of paying for tickets will show on OP's bank statement. I suppose then it would be down to the 'friend' to demonstrate that he'd paid him back.

That's exactly the sort of documentary evidence I was thinking of.

A copy the airline's terms and conditions should demonstrate why the former friend was the only person who could change the original booking.

The OP might well have text/WhatsApp messages and emails she could print out confirming the original arrangements and what has happened since then.

Or that there was an agreement to Not pay back

You could be right but OP's post didn't suggest that he was planning to treat his friend to the flight. Not sure why if the friend took over doing the booking because he was more internet savvy he didn't pay using his own card. 🤔

We used to book 3 flights together as it was better value and we guaranteed getting on the same flight. My friend always booked and paid and then I transferred our share of cost.

What if the 'friend' is of the online variety? There being the talk of going away together. Once tickets were purchased, online friend changed the name to her boyfriend's name.... Of course just speculation. But otherwise, why would the OP have paid for BOTH tickets? She of course will claim that it was a gift and that the OP decided to not accompany.

The salient part being that you transferred your share back to the person who paid. This obviously did not occur in the OP's case. So it sounds like a romantic trip for two that didn't take place, with the other person going with someone else instead. There might be a argument for getting the money back for the one ticket that cannot be described as a gift.
