PAYG mobile but suddenly being charged for data

Hoping someone on here can help, as tried Tesco mobile and they weren't at all helpful.

I am on a PAYG plan but on 2 occasions recently I have noticed I have been charged for mobile data even though my limit is set to 0% mb and it is turned off.

So around 11th July 2024 was charged for data, so checked all the apps and all set to wifi only, and no data, background data or roaming came up against any of the apps, and then the next day when I checked my balance I noticed the money had been refunded.

So, today, 8th August I have been charged for mobile data again, approx £1 and then 0.02p, even though the data limit is set to 0% mb (says I have used 46.90 kb, exceeded by 26.44 kb) and all my apps are still set to just wifi with no roaming, background or data allowed.

My phone is an Honor 8s, and I had not had this happen or changed any of the settings prior to being charged in July.
Thanks to all those that post.

My understanding is that even if you turn off mobile data on your phone's menu it's possible that it might use some data now and then for administrative reasons connecting to the network so maybe this triggers the charges you have experienced.

That’s an old phone from the days of Huawei. There is a possibility it is linking to a server in China for unknown reasons and sending some data. There is supposedly no way to stop it happening.

Just checked my wife's phone data usage with 1p mobile - also an Honor 8S - Small amounts of data used on days when she hasn't been out of the house and not on wifi - fortunately no charges as she has a small amount of data included in her monthly allowance. Varied between  0.1MB and 0.4MB per day as far as I can see. She has got a Huawei watch that connects to an Huawei app on the phone - suspect that may be the culprit!

Thanks for the answers to far.

So just checked the balance again as been in garden and can't get wifi out there and 98p has been added back to my balance, which is what happened in July as well.  Very weird.

I have found something in the settings which is "smart data saver" which is off, wondering if I should turn this on?  As far as I know this has always been off, and only recently started noticing larger amounts like £1 being taken from my balance.

I going to try it in my old mobile phone for a while and see if the same thing happens.
Thanks to all those that post.
